Well... in order are the best sci-fi (space-ish) shows I've seen and known:

1-Red Dwarf (I was watching this as a bloody baby, the best of the best!)

2- Star Trek: TOS

[Joint] 3- Star Trek: TNG & Star Trek: Voy

4- Star Wars: The Clone Wars

5- Doctor Who (Prefer the David Tennant Series but it's fallen in my charts)

Yeah, this is my Top 5 Sci-Fi shows

The original question here is 'In addition to Star Trek', so that would mean as in all Star Trek series and films.

My other most favorite series are Battlestar Galactica. I prefer the original series. And, Space 1999.

I incidentally once met Alan Dean Foster. (He e.g. wrote the Star Trek animated books.) He said that Battlestar Galactica was a derivative (of Star Wars). And that Space 1999 was even worse.

SpockType, I'd even have to agree that Battlestar Galactica was, at least, somewhat derivative of Star Wars. (I mean, the initial special effects were handled by the same guy!)

But the concept of the show was actually pretty original and was continually tweaked over the years by Glen Larson until the studios finally said, "Hey, can you make this like Star Wars? 'Cause that's mega-popular right now!" Ha.

Now, my love for the original Battlestar Galactica is primarily steeped in nostalgia, I'll admit. As a kid, I flipped over that show... I dug the Galactica, the Vipers, the Cylon Raiders, the Colonial outfits (the jackets and boots ruled!), the sound of the "laser torpedoes," you name it!

But... I also really liked the idea of a whole civilization of colonized worlds being hunted down to extinction by an armada of robot warriors built by an ancient race of reptilian sentients; the "rag-tag fleet searching for Earth" concept was pretty awesome.

And Ron Moore's reimagining was just downright EXCELLENT.

I've only seen a few episodes (maybe four or five) of Space 1999. But was it really derivative of anything? Wasn't the basic thrust of the series that the moon unhinged from orbit and went hurtling through the cosmos? That seems fairly original. Wacky, sure. But original, yes.

Including Voyager, and Enterprise a la st;but, I'd have to include ALL the modern sts, as the franchise in total predominates for me; BSG Classic; only seen the 'tv-movie' versions  of Nu BSG NBC aired a few years ago, so, not completely sure on that one; Stargate(The original preferred favorite for me among them; SGU was a turnoff for a time, but, warmed to it); while non-outer spacish, The X-Files, a great series, great characters; B5, Farscape was good.

Other than TOS and Enterprise, I like

Battlestar Galactica (the orginal)

The Matrix Trilogy, it doesn't take place in outer space, but the ships are similar to space-going vessels.

The first part of Andromeda, I lost interest when it changed so much in the middle of season 2.

Stargate Atlantis, I have only watched part of the first season, but it is pretty good so far.

I'm glad some Gundam series has been posted. It is called the Star Trek of Japan after all.

They aren't TV series but Halo and Mass Effect are really engaging story-wise.

Star Trek is like the old homestead at this point.  It'll always be home, but I've been doing a lot of travelling lately.

Been really getting into Doctor Who lately (been a fan for decades, but with the new show, there's a lot to catch up on), but also list, in no particular order, Star Wars, Farscape, Babylon 5, Firefly, Forbidden Planet, Galaxy Quest, and Battlestar Galactica (although the older show is more out of nostalgia; seriously, go back and actually watch those old episodes, some of them stink on ice).  There's also some lingering affection for Buck Rogers, and Space: 1999.

Hurray!!!!!!!

Somebody else finally recognises this.

The X-Files was without question the BEST series of the 1990s and beyond.

What Star Trek TOS did in the 1960s and perhaps TNG did in the 1980s - The X-Files did in the 1990s.

Brilliant - bring on the third movie

I liked Farscape and Babylon 5 (seasons 1-4) quite a lot. More than most Trek, really. The 2 important things these shows had going for them that Star Trek did not:
(1) The writers had a 5-season arc established before the shows even started. This allowed things to happen in season 1 that were followed up on in big ways in season 4. They also didn't get too stale. They told the big story they wanted to tell in 4 seasons or so, then went away vice trying to drag out the concept.
(2) The characters were generally more real and interesting. There wasn't a need to have "perfect" human society like Star Trek pushed for. This generally lead to more interesting characters who were heros because they OVERCAME their flaws, not juist because they didn't have any, like Star Trek tended to portray. The characters were also allowed to have (sometimes conflicting) faith beliefs, which Star Trek rarely did. (Although, TOS, unlike other Star Trek, had some great flawed human characters like Kirk.)

nuBSG also has the two above criteria and therefore should be beter than Trek for the same reasons. But I generally didn't like as much because, I guess, the characters were too flawed. I want some my heroes to be at least somewhat uplifting.

Firefly also has these two criteria and is a great show. Too bad it never got the chance to really finish the story it had planned.

Defying Gravity was also a bit like Firefly and the above. Great show cut down too soon.

I second the positive comments towards Red Dwarf, Dr Who, Buffy, Blake 7, Stargate,

And I would also add Alien Nation. Again, not a space show, and a bit preachy at times, but overall very well done.

Data Logan, I'm with you in regard to "real" characters who must overcome their flaws.

Roddenberry's edicts concerning TNG's perfect human society never sat well with me either. And as writer/producers Behr and Moore have noted, it removed tons of great storytelling possiblities. (Which is why they actually managed to make DS9 interesting. Ha. And their work on the two-parter "Homefront" and "Paradise Lost" really poked some holes in Roddeberry's "vision.")

And hey, you're right on the money with Moore's reimagined BSG. While I absolutely adore it? Those characters were often SO flawed, they were completely unlikable. But because of that, the audience was never quite sure who to root for ... and shades of gray like that make for some truly engaging TV. IMHO.

Anyway, we'll have to agree to disagree on Firefly. And I'm not sure I'm familiar with Defying Gravity.

However, I do agree that serialized storylines - or storylines that are connected to one larger thread - are generally more engaging than episodic fare.
