I watched this episode yesterday and loved it - Uhura gets a great part in it and so does Christine Chapel - great to see the women taking such a strong role in an episode, and as for that all-female rescue party, they can rescue me any time!

Yeah, that's a pretty cool sight. Nichelle Nichols hereself was pumped up when she first read the script.
It's not a bad episode at all, though I thought Spock should have been able to do more even at an old age. I mean Look at him in ST09.

Yeah! Girl power!
As for Spock I seem to recall him saying something in that episode to the effect of "It's like I have more to give."

I'll have to look at it again.

TOS showed us equality: we should treat alien races with respect and so on, all human races too.. We had a Russian and a Japanese on the bridge, but women were shown more like objects. Always pretty in short scirts, but rarely as competent officers (even the Romulan Commander had to face defeat..). Uhura and Christine Chapel have not had much to do, either. So this episode is very important as it shows finally a woman in command!

I love this episode for no other reason than we get to see the ladies of the Enterprise kick some butt. Instead of Uhura playing switchboard operator, she got to bean down to a hostile planet, phaser in hand, and take charge. I've never liked TOS because of its horrible female characters, and I found this episode refreshing.

She was pretty gungho with the phaser too, blowing up a vase next to the Female's Leader just to prove she was serious.

I thought it was quite strange that Spock also fell under those women's spell. :-)
I was reading that in Germany there's a myth of mermaids like that, who were called Lorelei. So, the episode must be from that.

In fact it has to come from the myth of Odyseus, where he and his crew had to pass through a place with Sirens singing. But there is also a poem of the German writer Heinrich Heine "Lorelei". A very beutiful one, by the way
