He definitely commands more respect with the beard. He looks more experienced and like he knows what he's doing.

I know why Riker has a beard in the second season! Jonathan Frakes dislikes shaving, according to the Memory Alpha people, so he came back to filming with the beard, and they decided to keep it, apparently.

I prefer Riker with a beard, he looks handsome and distinguished! By the way, Spock looks great with a beard!

I think when they were runnning the first season of TNG they made him grow a beard because he looked like young first officer. The beard made him look mor mature and experienced.
