Depends of the captain, actually.

Picard was more restrained and Riker more adventurous.

Spock was more restrained and Kirk more adventurous.

Fully agree with you there. To compare Spock to Riker we'd need a third captain I think, someone more nuetral to compare them evenly.

I still have to vote for Spock though, because having a first officer who can mind meld is pretty useful.

I agree completely. We could not imagine Picard with Spock, or Kirk with Riker as first officer, could we...

Spock is the best first officer in all of Trek, period. There's no comparison.

I know it is probably heresy, but I chose Riker, he seemed more like a first officer where Spock was science officer who just happened to be a first officer.

Are you sure it isn't time for a colorful metaphor?

Good point, OneDamnMinuteAdmiral:  Spock was supposed to be a Science Officer, whereas Riker was a Command XO.  However, either way, these two were the best first officers.

They both served well as First Officer but it's like comparing apples to oranges. Can't really compare one to the other except calling both an Apple and the Orange fruit. Same thing with Riker and Spock, they were both great First Officers but for different reasons.

I say Riker.  He objected to the captain leading away teams.  Spock just went along with Kirk's recklessness.

What was Riker's problem anyway? Hanging around Picard's coat-tails all the time even when he was offered his own command?

Good first officer material clearly - but perhaps not meant to go higher?

Riker thought it would be better to be first officer on the flagship, than a captain on some obscure small ship, at least for a while.  After a while, he became more attached to Enterprise, and didn't want to move on.   Much the same has been discussed in the thread(s) about Picard not making admiral... he just didn't want it.

They were definitely 2 different personalites and both served their captains in the appropriate way. Spock was best suited for Kirk and Riker best suited for Picard. Different styles that compliment each other. But I say Riker. Though I like Spock as a first officer don't get me wrong. I like Rikers style better.
