2. I have one DOFF so far... what do I do with her? How do I send her on missions? Can I customize her? Do i ever actually get to see her?
Make sure to go to the Personnel Officer in the NW bulding of the Academy (Federation) and request DOFFs.  You will be able to do this every few days.

And as you do your DOFF assignments, you'll build commendations which will get you higher level DOFFs.

question on this... when i talk to that person at the academy I see a whole list of DOFFs... how do I know which one I can choose? And when I pull up the menu of my own DOFFs, it's the same list the academy guy showed me? which one is mine?

Anything I can think of to put here would most likely get me banned

Yes, there should be a list - whichever ones are not disabled, you can click and then start the assignment (you just need to have assignment slots available.)  You can do multiple of these at the same time.

Which "academy guy"?  LT Ferra?

Can anyone explain to me how the currencies work in the game? I've played a few missions, but so far it seems the only way to earn money is to pick stuff up after fights and sell it, but nothings worth very much. Also, what is Zen all about?? Thanks in advance.

There are several different currencies:

Energy Credits: used to buy equipment, standard shuttles. These are obtained by selling or discarding items you own, mainly loot. You can also get them through events like "Tour the Galaxy"/"Targak's Challenge".

Dilithium: a "time-based" currency, obtained from daily missions and the like. They can be used to requisition starships, bridge officers, and special equipment. They can also be traded for Zen on the Dilithium Exchange.

Zen: purchaded with real money, or on the Dilithium Exchange. Used to buy extra stuff from the C-store.

Gold-pressed Latinum: obtained through the Dabo minigame. Mostly useless at the moment, though the Devs say they're doing more with it in the future.

Yea... they throttle it.  My connection is 40MB downstream / 20MB upstream and it still takes almost 2 hours for a full download because they throttle the download of the game to just a trickle.

The download takes a while, yes. And the first patch as well. But after that it't pretty quick.

Stick at first with the story missions till you get the hang of it. Don't loose focus and try to do everything at once.

I'll give some general advice.

Tactical officers are designed for dealing damage. They're deadly in combat, but somewhat fragile. Great for DPS. Recommended ships: Escorts.

Engineering officers are designed for survivability. Tough, and capable of dealing a decent amount of damage. Great for tanking. Recommended ships: Cruisers.

Science officers are designed for support. This includes weakening enemy units, or strengthening your own. They make great healers. Recommended ships: Science Vessels.

There's a partial list of currencies a few posts above. If there's any specific area you'd like advice in, just let me know.

Yes, but beware of mission spoilers!
