I'm glad you found this thread helpful! And thanks for bumping.

1 - As ODMA said, using the arrow keys is the best way. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be beating those minigames in under two seconds.

2 - Generally, once you complete a storyline mission you'll almost immediately receive another one from the Admiral. There are also side missions around the social zones, but those don't really further the game's story.

3 - Attack patterns are best used on maneuverable Escort ships. They buff different skills such as speed, weapons, etc. I don't really use them that much.

4 - Yes, but it's not really that expensive. If you're in need of Energy Credits, just wait till something drops that you don't need, then either discard it or sell it on the Exchange.

5 - Generally you'll get what you need through loot drops. You can purchase gear with Energy Credits or Dilithium.

Each item has different versions available with each rank. Ensign/Lieutenant can only use Mk I-II, Lieutenant Commander can only use I-IV, Commander can only use I-VI, etc.

There are also different qualities for every item - Common (white), Uncommon (green), Rare (Blue), Very Rare (purple), and Unique (also white). Uncommon and up have modifiers that slightly enhance its performance - for example, shields with a [Pha] modifier are slightly more resistant to phaser damage.

You can only have one Unique version of an item per character.

6 - Well, as you're aware all ships have shields that soak up incoming damage. Try to maneuver yourself into a position where you can knock out one of an enemy's shield facings so you can rip up their hull. Torpedoes and mines are most effective against hull, beams are most effective against shields, and cannons/turrets are equally effective against both.

7 - There are numerous "Daily" missions that grant lots of skill points and Dilithium. Also try out some events, fleet actions, deep space encounters, exploration clusters, etc.

8 - PvP (player vs. player) and PvE (player vs. enemy) are the main multi-player systems. You can also join "fleets" to hang out around doing missions or just socializing.

Hope that helps a bit.

VERY helpful, thanks for starting it, sir!

Thanks for this response, too. I'm getting the hang of it a little more now. I bounce between different stations (K-7, Earth Space Dock, etc) and pick up missions along the way. Getting the hang of managing my inventory...kind of fun.

Any helpful noob hints that you can think of are welcome...otherwise I'll post again next time I get befuddled...which probably won't be long.

No problem!

1 - Don't get frustrated when you get creamed in PvP...it takes a while to master. I still have trouble with it myself quite often.

2 - You're a long way from level 50, but I might as well say it now: do NOT queue for an Elite SFT without getting some practice in the Normal ones first.

3 - Cruisers are built for survivability, Science vessels are built for healing, and Escorts are built for maneuverability and destroying opponents as quickly as possible. Escorts are kind of squishy, but they're lots of fun.

4 - Be sure to use cannons when flying maneuverable ships like Escorts.

5 - Tactical Team counters Boarding Parties. Very useful when fighting the Borg or the Jem'Hadar.

6 - Polarize Hull makes you immune to Tractor Beams for a short period. Useful when fighting the Borg or the Breen.

7 - Always remember to equip you and your Boffs with Frequence Remodulators before fighting the Borg on the ground. The Borg will adapt to damage types (ex: phaser, disruptor, tetryon, etc), at which point you have to remodulate your weapons. Feel free to go at them with a Bat'leth or a Lirpa, but remember that they can assimilate you if you're not careful!

8 - Invest in some Quantum Torpedoes. Trust me, they're worth it.

There is an unofficial application that allows STO to work on Macs. I use it, and can testify that for the most part, it works perfectly. Here's the link: http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=76799

Why can't you create a Cryptic account? Is there an error message of some kind?

I thought you only needed a PW account for it, should I make a Cryptic as well? Sorry I'm really bad at this sort of thing.

See this is why I'm confused. I already got it downloaded then when I clicked on it loaded and loaded then it took me to a page with that had the C Store and such. But I couldnt actually play because I never got a verification e-mail when I made my account, so I couldnt activate for a Silver member status. I'm completely confused.

Hmm...so you didn't get the confirmation email for your Cryptic account or PWE account?

Try checking to see if your email think's it's spam. If that doesn't work, make sure you entered the right email address. If everything is correct, give it a few hours to try to send the email.

Alright, I already made sure I used the right e-mail and I checked both my normal inbox and my junk inbox. But I signed up probably 9-10 hours ago, I'm getting impatient!
