SO, who's the real miracle worker? who deserves to be Star Trek's top engineer?

I go for Scotty. Not only was he the first; not only did he pull of miracles on a weekly basis; not only did he write the books La Forge studied from; but he was entertaining to boot!

Geordi Laforge has always been one of my favorite Trek characters, but I have to vote Scotty. He performed all those engineering miracles and still managed to drink like a fish. The man must have a superhuman liver. (Or would it be kidneys?)

I say Scotty. He always knew how to fix whatever needed fixing, and was able to do it quickly. Miracle worker? Heck yeah.

I voted for Scotty but really no Miles O'brien? And I'm sure somebody's favorite has to be B'elanna Torres

I also have to consider Miles O'Brien as a worthy successor to Scotty, but LaForge was also ok by me likewise Trip. Truly it's Chief O'Biren for this case definatly Montgomery Scott.

Scotty was fixing starship engines when Geordi's grandfather was in diapers.

Are you sure it isn't time for a colorful metaphor?

I like Geordi (and much better with the visor) and considered him to be a thoughtful character. He was one of the better TNG figures and in many ways he was the antithesis of Scotty. I really loved the episode where they meet - a great gift for TOS and TNG fans alike. I also like his long-suffering and stoic relationship with Data.

But ultimately there is only one engineer for me and that is the original miracle worker Montgomery Scott. He defined what a ships' engineer was and how on earth could you ever follow it? He had a genuine love for the Enterprise and it always amuses me how in The Trouble With Tribbles he gets into a brawl with the Klingons - not because they insulted his captain (as Kirk later wryly acknowledges) - but because they derided his ship!!!

In many respects characters in Later Treks are best discerned by what they are not - i.e. how far they manage to get the character away from the TOS archetype:

So with Picard we have the anti-Kirk (old; bald; not good with ladies; shy; retiring; cautious etc.)

With La Forge we have the anti-Scott (relaxed; young; pronounced non-Scots different ethnicity; unemotional; largely humourless)

With Crusher we have the anti-McCoy (decidedly female; practical; untraditional; very straight; non-confrontational)

And with Data we have the anti-Spock (seeking humanity; verbose; clumsy; childlike; unperceptive; not enigmatic)

As the franchise continued it was interesting to see how they would keep addressing these issues with more and more variants seeking to be as unalike the TOS legends as possible. Understandably so - but not always successfully so.

More than anything, I always found most of what Scotty said to be just pure gold. Here's some of my favorite gems:

"Aye, and if my grandmother had wheels she'd be a wagon."

"Diplomats! The best diplomat I know is a fully activated phaser bank."

"You mind your place, mister, or you'll be wearing concrete galoshes."

"A keyboard! How quaint"

Indeed. You expertly illustrate just how rounded and deep the character was and how essential a component he was as both singular character and ensemble cast member of this great 'family'.

The TOS guys might be termed the "Space Family Roddenberry"

Ob'rien is my favorite. He was such a well written character with depth. Scotty although a great chacter and I love him. Kinda had a lack of depth to him. Not much going on in the sub text.
