Rules and Regs of Book Club

1. This is meant to be a friendly and casual place to read Star Trek canon. As such, any person that posts material that an admin deems inappropriate (be it lewd, hate-filled, or anything else) will have that post erased and person will be given a warning. You get one warning per year, second violation means being kicked from the group. Always assume the PG-13 rating is in effect.

2. Admins control the speed of the material. Admins will do all they can to make sure that everyone is kept in the loop, but everyone is expected to pay due diligence and try to keep pace.

3. Admins determine material that is read and discussed. as such, they will announce each week what material will be talked about and will give people 3 weeks notice before the next book to allow members to get a copy of the new material.

4. Awards will be given during the reading of each book. Admins determine the winner. A member cannot win a prize more than once every 6 months (multiple accounts will be seen as a cheat).

5. Awards will be decided upon at the end of each book (approx every 6 weeks) and no prize awarded will be more than $25 (not counting S&H) on startrek.com.

6. Awards that will be given with each book will be: Most Posts (related directly to the book), Best Post (post that gives best insight), and MVP (person who provides best overall postings and insight).

7. Each award will have a 1st place ($25) and a 2nd place ($10).

8. Minors may not win any prize. Minor is identified as anyone under the age of 18.

Well, no trek literature is "canon".  For discussing books, hard to beat trekbbs.  Lots of readers there, authors too.

This list of rules doesn't exactly make me want to join.  You just say, "We are starting a book club and here's a list of things NOT to do."  That doesn't exactly generate enthusiasm.  Then you say there are awards.  Awards for what?

I believe when you know your boundaries and mine, you and I can get along better. This book club has several Star Trek RPG fleets involved with readers in ages from 14 to their 60's. I personally would never consider joining any groups that did not have the ability to clearly define its boundaries. With a c confirmed current reader group of over 25, structure is necessary.

As for the awards they are chosen by the winner from the Startrek.com store. They are for participation within the discussion groups. We decided not to choose the items beforehand because a female reader and a male reader may prefer different items.

The book club is the culmination of a Star Trek RPG game I play in that works with a few other SIMs and Fleets as well. When it was decided that the book club would be public and not limited to just one fleet or to just the gaming community, the prizes were added in. We are lucky to be sponsored by a fleet that has the resources to sustain this and doesn’t even ask that their name be mentioned. They give away prizes bought from Startrek.com every few months, and it seems to be a nice bonus for the hard work some people put into the different projects.

I hope this addresses some of your concerns, the Canon part I am leaving for someone with more knowledge of Canon than myself. I have emailed him this URL and asked him to either reply directly or to please send me his reply.

Thanks

Chase

OK sorry about the delay here, but here is the reply as it is written to me so please don’t shoot the messenger LOL.

Actually, certain books are known canon. For example, the tech manuals written for each series, as well as the compendiums that give us the brief synopsis of episodes are all canon. While it has long been assumed that none of the novels were accepted canon, shortly before the final seasons of DS9 and Voyager, certain novels were accepted into canon. That was furthered along in the TNG movie era as the screenwriters and even directors of the films often searched for inspiration from the novels that were being written. As it stands today, all of the Titan novels are accepted canon (and the only active series that is canon), the Avatar and Unity trilogy are as well (they provide us with the post DS9 info), Tales of the Dominion War (giving us insight into events which DS9 was unable to fit into the series by more than mere mention), as well as a few other books. The incentive for you to join the book club is to allow you a chance to read the canon novels and be able to discuss them with other individuals that enjoy the material. Prizes just make it a bit more fun.

Ok, now back to in my own words. I am sure there are some great book clubs out there, and personally I don’t care what book club someone joins, I just encourage people to get out there and read. I got a Kindle Fire for Christmas from my Godfather and it has just renewed my desire to really get lost in a book (or 9). I do this for me and the others who have decided it’s worth reading along with me.

Incorrect.  Only on screen material is considered "canon".  Even the authors of trek lit will tell you the books add "continuity" but are not "canon".  The relaunch material, including Titan, have excellent editorial controls but are not held as being as concrete in the trek universe as episodes and movies.  I believe the same is true of the tech manuals.  Writers use the trek reference works but you won't see them or novels in trek trivia games such as "Scene It" or "Obsessed with "Star Trek" because they are not canon.

I love the trek books and I wish they were canon.  The novel authors produce stories just as good or better than those on tv but unfortunately the franchise chooses not to elevate them to the status they deserve.  Too bad too, because maybe more fans would read them if the franchise endorsed them as canon.

I read most of the trek books on my kindle.  I then review them on Amazon and trekbbs.  The great thing about the bbs lit boards is the ability to get author feedback.  David Mack is the only one who roves about on st.com.  If you get the chance to chat with him, he is a great guy.

HAHA its sounding to me like you and Joe would get along great. Joe is who told me what to say in response to your original statement. If you’re ever bored I would say you could email him at admiralcarroll@independencefleet.com I admit my ignorance in the area of Canon. I never was able to figure it out as some source says yes and some say no whenever i ask a question in this area.

Since I am reading the books anyways I think it’s a wonderful idea for me to check out that other location mention as well. The book club is not about anything other than just having some people to talk to about the books I need to read for the Star Trek game anyways (plus who doesn't love a good Star Trek Novel)

Not sure I would ever have much to say to the authors though, I am sure enough people have said how wonderful their work or imaginations are, and I would never complain about the hard work someone put into any of these books if I didn’t like something, but I would enjoy reading peoples comments on chapters and ideas represented in the books because that seems to help me realize when I have missed something in a book. I am the type who will go back and read a chapter again if someone else understood it differently.

Thanks again

Chase

It does deepen your appreciation of the books to be able to discuss them with others, same as all media.  But not as many fans read the books so it is harder finding ones to have effective interchanges with.

Discussing the books with the authors is great because sometimes it is nice to know why certain things happen as they did.  There were a few recent books that left me confused, even upset but I appreciated them more after understanding the writer's intent or little bits I missed.  In your discussions, I would recommend someone monitor trekbbs for those nuggets.

"Canon" is only in the eyes of the individual.

hey , I'm a little late in reading this forum, but once I saw Star Trek book club. I WAS HOOKED.

I personally have over 30+ Start Trek books, from all the era's and I'd love to join if I can. I know I wouldn't get the prize or anything because I'm a minor but talking to other people about a good book is always the best part. So please get back to me soon so we can set a date for the next novel.
