I just rewatched this wonderful episode on Netflix (thank you, netflix, for helping me relive my adolescence. Also, thankyou, netflix, for helping me realize that watching Star Trek defined my adolescence), and in its gripping climax, as I'm sure many of you remember, Sisko decides to fly the battered (and deep-fried) Defiant into the wormhole after the minefield around it is disarmed, hoping to take out as many of the 2,000 Dominion reinforcements flying through it from the Gamma Quadrant.

Luckily for us, the Prophets intervene and decide to end the existence of probably tens of thousands of Jem'Hadar warriors, tipping the balance of power in the Federation's favor, at least for a while. (thanks, guys!) It's interesting that their communion with Sisko in this pivotal scene is basically a suicide intervention, as the good captain has apparently thought of no other option but to take on an enormous armada and die trying to destroy it.

I find it curious that the most obvious alternative--collapsing the wormhole--is not brought to the table. It had been explored before, and in such a crucial moment, why bother flying in and just sort of hoping for the best? Why wouldn't collapsing the wormhole, probably permanently, be suggested? Yes, we don't want to close the Celestial Temple for all future visitors, or harm the prophets. That would be sad. But considering the staggering amount of Dominion warships coming through from Gamma and the consequences that would have upon the Alpha Quadrant, it seems Sisko would have no trouble sacrificing the wormhole.

Anyone have any thoughts, or insight on this?

They tried to collapse it with a modified graviton beam in "In Purgatory's Shadow" (halfway through Season 5) but a changeling sabotaged their efforts. Here's Chief O'Brien's take on the situation afterward:

"I don't know who it was, but they did a pretty thorough job. The emitters had the exact opposite effect of what we'd intended: it was supposed to collapse the wormhole's spatial matrix and close it forever, but instead it made the matrix even more stable. Not even trilithium explosives could destroy it now."

Considering a trilithium bomb almost destroyed the entire Bajoran star system in the very next episode ("By Inferno's Light"), that's pretty impressive.

So no matter what kind of weaponry the Defiant had during "Sacrifice of Angels", there's no way Sisko could have done anything to destroy the wormhole, even if he self-destructed the ship.

"The future is in the hands of those who explore... And from all the beauty they discover while crossing perpetually receding frontiers, they develop for nature and for humankind an infinite love." - Jacques Yves Cousteau

I would argue, collapsing it with what?

The last time this was considered as a option, Sisko & co. had a lot of time for planning and also the resources of the station at their disposal. They were able to consult with scientists on Trill. In The Search, their experiences were merely part of an interactive programme. (Essentially fake.) Now they only have the Defiant and they are in the middle of a rather impromptu battle.

If anything, it may be that they have neither the resources nor the time.
