I am just curious.. I saw two or three episodes when the crew is playing poker and everytime Data has this eyeshade, peak or whatever you call it.. Does anyone know why?

Sometimes Data does certain things in a naive sort of way to be more human. He's grown a beard, dyed his hair and crosses his arms when he notices others cross their arms when having a serious conversation. He probably wears the visor, eyeshade, because he picked up on it while studying the game of poker.

Exactly. Data tends to do certain things in order to mimic human behaviour. Most likely he read somewhere that cellophane visors or whatever are traditional when playing poker.

Now I get it, I wasn't aware that poker players sometimes wear that thing.. So I thought maybe his yellow eyes cannot be exposed to this dim light where they play

Yes quite right. He is getting into character. That is something he always tries to do. A human would see that as being perhaps pretentious or over-the-top, but to Data it is all part of understanding the concept at hand (with all its details and theatre etc.).

I some ways he is a Trekkie in reverse. Whereas some fans of the show sometimes feel it brings them closer to Star Trek if they dress up in Star Fleet or Klingon uniforms etc.; Data goes the opposite way and is trying to be like us. Picard does this too with his Dix routines; as indeed does Data once again as he attempts to be Sherlock Holmes.

The visor was unnecessary- for Data, at any rate- but he most likely read that poker players sometimes wear them to prevent the overhead glare of lights from being so oppressive on their eyes... and Data, being Data, just had to mimic that behavior.

I think that this is just one of the little things that makes Data such a wonderful character.

I think it is because Data researched poker and found out people wears visors during the game and thought, it might 'increase his chance of winning'
