A Theoretical approach to terraforming Mars

  The Genesia Project 
Phase One: The Drilling and Water and Gas Fracking of Mars


The first phase of Project Genesia to terraform Mars into a semi-habitable planet would be the drilling and liquid and gaseous fracking of the Martian layers of soil. The drilling rigs would first drill to the bottom most layer of the crust. Once the drilling was complete the drill collars would be extracted from the ground and the fracking casing installed.
The fracking casing would be like normal casing used on Earth to extract oil and natural gas except that holes a various sizes would be drilled into each casing along the casings length. Once the fracking casing had been installed the gases of Mars, Carbon, Argon, Nitrogen and the other minute gases of the atmosphere would be pumped into the fracking casing. As more and more gas pressure is added into each casing the gas will want to escape along the least path of resistance just like electricity and water does. The pressurized gas will find the nooks and cracks in the various layers of the soil. As the gas finds its way into the soil it will cause the Martian foundation to begin to crack opening up much larger crevices. Once enough gas fracking had occurred the gas would be expelled back through the Blockhouse and reintroduced into the atmosphere.
After the initial phase of fracking has occurred drilling would resume to the core of Mars through the fracking casing but with smaller drill casing. In this case most of the drilled material would remain inside of the fracking casing while the core was drilled to. Once the core had been drilled to within one mile of the Martian core drilling allowing material stored in the fracking casing to be inserted into the core. Once the Mile Point had been reached liquid water brought from Earth , Europa and other places within the Sol System would be pumped under pressure into the hole. As the water filled up the hole and occupied the cracks and crevices created by the gaseous fracking the water would further erode the mantle of Mars and the crust somewhat. After the mantle had been fracked enough the drilling would continue to the core of Mars. In theory once the core of Mars had been penetrated and the material and water under pressure entered into the core of Mars the core of Mars would become like a pressure cooker. Over time and depending upon how many core holes had drilled and how much material and water were added to core would see the mass of the core of Mars increase just like a fire increases in size and heat the more wood that you add to it. The most vital part of the project is controlling the amount of material and water added to the core. To much at one time could see the core become unstable and explode causing catastrophic destruction to Mars. The material and water would need to be added constantly and at a controlled rate so that the pressure build up in the core of Mars would not breach the solid shell but would slowly melted the solid shell around Martian core so that the shell would fall into the core of Mars thus adding more material. As the material and water are continued to be added and are melted in the furnace of Mars gas and water vapor will be released from the change in the state of matter of changing from a solid to gaseous molecular state. Once enough pressure has built up in the core the gas  at the core will want to escape along the path of least resistance which would back up through the holes drilled. As the heated gas from the core courses though the casing and found its way into the fracked portions of the mantle and crust the heat will further melt or liquefy the areas affected as well as continuing to frack the mantle and crust of Mars. The liquefied material now called magma would heat various layers of the Martian mantle and crust thus causing even more molecular changes within the crust and mantle of Mars. The heat of the magma will eventually cause various areas of the Martian mantle to be like islands on a magma stream where the Martian mantle plates would create a tectonic plate movement similar to what occurs on Earth. Once tectonic plate movement occurs and the shell solid shell of Mars core has been worn away the processing of circulation will be complete as Mars would then take over the process. Each time that a chunk of the Martian interior core or the layer directly above where the solid shell had once been an equal portion of core mass would be sent to the surface of Mars through volcanic activity the same that it occurs on Earth.


In theory once again as the core of Mars increases in gaseous and liquid mass and less solid mass a larger electromagnetic field will be produced. As the EM Field increases around Mars and blocks out the Suns effect on Mars just the like EM field of Earth protects Earth from the intense radiation that would otherwise kill life on Earth. Once the EM field of Mars would strong enough to repel the Sun’s UV rays UV rays that make it through the EM field would then interaction with the molecules being released from the core of Mars as well as the molecules injected into the Martian atmosphere at the Blockhouses.  Eventually clouds would form on Mars from water. Storms would occur as static electricity in the clouds built up thus producing lightning and other climatic weather environments. The most important factor would be inciting the dormant life on Mars to begin the process of its own evolution. Once the environment was suitable for the seeds of plants that are dormant and located within the soil of Mars and the microbial life form responsible for their upkeep at the Ph level of interaction then we will see the evolutionary change in Mars from a dead planet into more Earth like and habitable planet that humans can then live on and develop just like we have done with Earth.


The key to inciting the microbial evolution on Mars is the water introduced into the various layers of Mars. According to Gerald Dickens living organisms favor the carbon-12 isotope found in water. So when water is introduced into the environment of Mars and heated to various temperatures the microbial within the soil of Mars would react accordingly thus possibly creating foraminifera colonies under the surface of Mars.


Also another important factor is the heating of the CO2 that would be released back into the atmosphere either naturally as it is trapped in the fracked portions of the Martian surface where the magma underneath of it would heat it and cause it too rise to the surface of Mars and then into the atmosphere or through another portion of the Blockhouse that would then heat the CO2 up and  release it back into the atmosphere.


Microbial and other forms of life love a temperate heat range where they can perform their actions at normal rate as opposed to hot of a temperature or too cold of a temperature. Basically the microbial interactions with their environment can be gauged the same way that you operate in the various temperature climates. Do you feel more free and able to do what you like to do during the summer because of the modest temperature? Do you feel less inclined to do normally what you would do during summer during the colds of winter or during the extremely hot days? You want to move around less and do less during such weather extremes. Microbial are the same way. Since Mars is rather cold because of the lack of an EM field then the microbial on Mars would be like you and me during the colds of winter less inclined to want to go outside the shell of the house where the warmer climate is.


Although the goal of terraforming a planet in the manner described above might take a few hundred years the outcome of terraforming Mars in this manner will give humanity a second planet from which to live on.

In the newest issue of Science Illustrated, it discusses this very topic and has an outline of a plan NASA developed, but the government pulled the plug on back in 2010 because of the economy and need to make cutbacks. It's a pretty cool read!

This theory seems similar alike the approach to release CO gases into the atmosphere of Mars to heat up the planet for creating through terraforming a vegitable surface. So could life & humans be able to breath on the planet when that theory concludes after a bunch of years. Further it could make Mars habitable, but it's still a theory. Like I said it's near the one of this topic is about, except releasing magma from the crust for terraforming of tektonic plades & changing the EM field.


 


I personaly disagree with the theory I was refering to for the reason it would mean making the same mistakes we've done to our planet. The best thing about it would be to make Mars habitable for us.

Once again. This can be solved with our wonderful friend, methane gas.
Yup just pack up loads of pork and beans and rip away. That'll warm up the planet nice and fast only don't light a match.

Not really. Warming up the planet in the manner you discuss really wont work. The problem with Mars is that the core is not as active as Earths. With a less active core the EM Field that protects Mars against the Suns UV rays is considerably less than the field is on Earth.


Since the field is not as active on Mars then the Sun's UV rays would pretty much 'burn' any gas off of the surface of Mars.


Your idea about using methane would work if a colony dome was first created to house the methane gas.


Did you know that methane gas is able to be created synthetically thus allowing your idea to work on Mars without having to drill for the methane gas located under the surface of the Martian soil.


Like I have mentioned if you are interested in such things come on over to the Mars Drive Forums where we talk about everything related to Mars.


I for one think that the Moon should be used as a test bed for a Martian colony as the Moon IS RIGHT THERE! It's right there! How difficult would it be to take the theories surrounding creating a colony on Mars and test and tweak them on the Moon?


This is the 1500's we have been to the Moon and can get there again. Hopefully NASA or a Privateering Company like Scaled Composite gets us there. The biggest cost factor involved however is delivering cargo to the Lunar surface.


If anyone can figure out how to cost effectively deliver a 2000 lb. cargo pallet to the surface of the Moon where the least amount of fuel and vehicle components are used and left behind and wasted then getting to the Moon and Mars can wont be in a few hundred years but maybe within the next twenty years.


The answer is in the future and if you can find the answer in the future to bring that answer to the present then you can say that you have folded time in respect to an answer not being found for a few hundred years but where the answer has been pulled from the future into the now to make the now the future from a hundred years from now.

I thought that I would not live to see the day that the speed of light was broken but CERN has discovered that for some reason a neutrino is faster than the speed of a photon which should give everyone hope that at least a sublight engine will be created within the next fifty years. Science and technology doubles every two years as the processes become faster and faster and the components become smaller and smaller.

Yeah, just look how far warp drive's come already!


Alcubierre's '94 paper showed the spacte-time metric reqired in the framework of general relativity, but predicted a required energy greater than the mass of the universe!


Obousy-Cleaver's '09 paper reduced the energy requrements to 10^45 Joules and predicted how to create the warp bubble in the framework of string theory.


So some "far-out" theories are coming well into our reach. Terraforming, AI, cybernetics and space travel will all be a big part of the coming century! Warp drives and wormholes in the millenia that follows....


The A Drive however did not take into account that the energy creating the immense gravitational pressure on an object is in fact Dark Matter which is the placenta of the creation of the Universe.


I firmly believe that black holes are in fact areas of space where dark matter has been collapsed in on itself at the speed of light as a result of a suns collapse. Think about it if have a sphere that has dark matter passing through it and the mass of the sun suddenly collapses around it and on top of it wouldn't that dark matter succumb to the extreme pressure of a solar mass at the speed of light?


Dark Matter is the fastest form of energy in the Universe...to date...seeing how a black hole cannot be seen, just like dark matter, but can be detected by the immense amout of gravitational variations which could only be created by a process present during or before the Big Bang it can be theorized that dark matter is the only known form of matter in the form of a black hole that is able to capture a light photon.


A photon is massless and does not have an electrical charge. So how can the black hole consume the light photon?


There has to be some close relationship between dark matter in regular phase space and in a black hole where the light photon and dark matter interact in such a way to create a bond.


If a way was discovered to understand the bonding of a black hole and a light photon and the process reverse engineered then theoretically a ship could create a similar type of field around a ship that would be a black hole turned inside out that instead of drawing in all matter within its reach the process would in fact repel all matter within reach to create a tunnel through space. A tunnel that would be free of any particles where the field could be adjusted so that the pressure of the repelled particles located on the outside of field would squeeze the field around the ship, like a hand that squeezes the tied portion of a balloon where the pressure placed on the balloon would propell the ship forward in velocity comparable to the amount of Universal pressure placed upon it.
