The Gideons want to control their population through plague. The Kaelonians require ritual suicide at 60.  Neither are open to alternatives to control their population or expand their territory.

The heath care systems on these planets are no doubt interesting.

They both suck. But the ritual suicide one annoys me more because it is presented in a way that makes it seem "reasonable".

But then again, I'm not always PC and feel pretty free to say that not every cultural tradition is good and some are flat out stupid.

I thought of taste of armageddon but it was a way to sanitize war not control the population so I figured it was an unfair comparison.

I hated Kirk's response more because he acted as if typhoid mary was a hero and could have stopped her saying she stole biological elements from the federation with the intent to kill.

I think the people in half life were worse because the population as a whole was in agreement and were willing to destroy the enterprise if they didn't force the doctor to return and were going to suppress his planet saving work if he didn't kill himself. The daughter even disowned her father. It wasn't even a religious act of devotion, it was a ritualistic suicide the doctor said had outlived its usefulness. Also, the daughter said he wouldn't be buried with his wife if he didn't consent. I thought, "If a world is that overpopulated, do they have the space for grave yards? Seems like they'd be cremated to save space."

The people of Gideon on the whole didn't know what was coming.

That's a cop out, you are not a starfleet officer and even if you were you could express your opinion.

Kaelon II. There, they have an ongoing ritual. On Gideon, one man had an idea which didn't end up happening.

See, they both suck. But at least with Kirk the young woman didn't ask to stay. Although, I would have sent her back germ-free. The doctor asked for asylum.

It seems ri-damn-diculous that these species could become warp capable but not find a way to curb the population that didn't involve genocide or suicide.

I'm pretty sure the people of Gideon knew what was going on, their were plenty of them pressed up aginst that full scale mock up of the Enterprise. The council explained to Kirk how the girl would be considered a hero among her people. The Gideons had eliminated sickness fron their society and learned the hard way that sickness was natures way of controlling the population. Remember, there was no political motive here, nor was it a eugenics program. They were just trying to restore the natural order of things.

Plague is part if the natural order? Perhaps we should eliminate health care? No need to kill the population or find ways to eliminate the weaker, just colonize like treknoir said. Same for three people of Kaelon. Just because your planet is home or sacred doesn't mean you can't colonize nearby planets where they can visit.

I like the elaborate method of population control used in Logan's Run. These fools are amatures compared to that.

While both cultures are free to follow a path that works best for them, the Kaelonians are more offensive. They were acting in a collectivist fashion, denying the wishes of an individual - if Timicin didn't concede, then he was to be ostracized from society. On Gideon, however, Hodin outright stated that individuals could freely participate or not participate in the depopulation program.
