How many really believe that the inoffensive, impotent pop song theme combined with a gushingly hopeful collage of real and imaginary accomplishments did significant harm to the series? If you could ride the bird around the golden clock of space what would you change?

I'd replace the song with Struggle by William Shatner and the sequences with shots of the ship in various stages of "beat to shit" in hostile environments.

Anyone else? Speculate pointlessly with me on how to improve that which is already past and beyond our grasp.

The song grew on me after a couple of years. I wouldn't want to see it gone now.

I say remove the theme to allow a few more minutes of content. I personally liked the video mosaic. The space program shots were great as were the future soave stuff. Then being able to do the mirror opening was genius.

The theme did a good job expressing that the show is about exploration. Unfortunately, the show didn't end up exploring enough to live up the theme as it had more diplomacy than exploration.

As for the music. I like the song and don't get the hate. That said, The theme is better with the Perfect Strangers music as seen on youtube.

For future reference, if you think a subject has been talked about to death, try searching before starting a new thread.

I liked the theme the first two seasons, but did not like the pop job fake over they gave it the third and fourth seasons.

Having just watched Through a Mirror Darkly for the first time last night, I must say I liked whaty they did with the opening for those two episodes!

I really liked the actual videoclip being shown, as for the song, well...

It's OK, but I prefer instrumental intros.  For any sci-fi tv show for that matter

The song fit the series, given what it wass about, but did get old after awhile.

Loved the song.  Every time I watch an episode I have to sing right along with it!

I think the theme actually did do damage to the success of ENTERPRISE.  One of the reasons I didn't watch the show when it was first broadcast was not just because the song seemed so awful, but because if the brains that thought it was a good idea to use it were the same ones making the show, I wanted nothing to do with it.

Still baffles me.  I mean sure, Berman is baby boomer who might think that 90s Bryan Adams adult contemporary speaks to him and therefore speaks to everybody.  But Brannon Braga, who was born in '65, has no excuse.  I don't know anyone under 45 who actually likes that kind of music (and the ones over 45 who do have questionable taste).

In any case, the song really anchors the show in our era.  It's like starting each episode with a character saying "Who let the dogs out?" or something.  That's what's great about symphonic scores -- they're timeless.  (You can debate how there are different symphonic film music styles that can be tied to eras, but I'd argue that it's a lot harder for audience to conjure an association the way they can with a pop song.)

There is a fix for the theme song problem, however.  (Another fix besides just fast forwarding through the titles, that is.)  If you time it right, the opening theme to FIRST CONTACT actually works really well as a theme for the show.  I was curious how Goldsmith's Copland-esque theme for FC might mix with the imagery, and low and behold, with the exception of the fact that the track itself is too long, it's brilliant.  When I watched the show on Netflix, I found myself doing this trick more than a few times to get me into the right mood to watch the show.

Final note about the opening of the show: All due respect to Alan Shepard, but shouldn't they have shown Yuri Gargarin?  "The Omega Glory" notwithstanding, shouldn't it be about human space achievement, and not just American space achievement?

I think the theme song is awesome. I just started watching Enterprise today for the first time. After watching a few episodes I cruised the boards a little and found out that It was actually on TV not that long ago and my first thought was "That sucks." because I couldn't believe I 'd never seen it before. Anyway, back to topic. I've only seen through episode 8 so far, but I was singing along with the theme song by episode 2. Yup, I guess I'm hooked.

Your initial assumption was dead-on: this has been beaten to death.

I disliked the song in the beginning, but it totally grew on me. Everytime I saw the intro, I just had to sing along.

The theme song was great. I just hated when they changed it in season 3 like when they changed Ds9.
