Does anyone here have a great respect for Rick Berman as I do?

Rick Berman did great things with the franchise and made it highly successful in the 80s and 90s. Toward the end of his reign, Trek lost quality. Nemesis and the finale of ENT were terrible and GEN could have been handled much, much better (though I still ove it). What aggrevates me about Berman in these instances isn't that he made dumb decisions but that he either doesn't acknowledge them as being dumb or won't admit it.

However, not all of those failings can be laid at Berman's feet. Paramount was greedy and wanted to milk the cow dry. They rushed Voyager to have a trek show to launch UPN with. They rushed ENT so as not to go a year without Trek on the air and it was Paramount, not Berman, who wanted the Temporal Cold War that plagued ENT.

I don't think it is wise for a manager or executive to sit at the same desk for too long because they either become impotent and apathetic or they get a God complex. So I think Berman did great things but I wish he had left sooner to bring in fresh executive direction and I wish Paramount had let the Trek franchise steer its destiny instead of grabbing the wheel at times and steering it into a ditch.

Would I welcome Berman back into an executive position at Trek? Yes. I think he would learn from his mistakes even if he doesn't understand them. Plus he has the knowledge of the franchise and connections in the hollywood community to make it thrive again.

I agree completely. I would love to see Rick Berman come back into Trek. Although, I think he's had his fill of it. He got alot of bad treatment from both Paramount and the fans.

Berman became the fans favorite Whipping Boy, he did things i didn't like but i always remind myself that he was always at the mercy of the guys in the front office who had the last voice on all decisions.
During 'ENTERPRISE', they were told by the front office the ship had to be an Akira class ship (Doug Drexler had a fight on his hands to give it an antique look) and the studio was cutting the budget still further - Berman would be Mad if he wanted back into that again.

By the way ServilanFan, Roddenberry didn't create Transporters and ships that were too big to land - they have been staples of popular Science Fiction since the early days of popular Science Fiction, no disrespect to Gene but he adapted things from the past and passed them off as his own original ideas - need i remind you of Mick Fleetwood acrediting the whole notion of Space Travel to Roddenberry?l

Yeah, it sounds like it was just all a big mess. But Rick Berman deserves way more Credit than Roddenberry does.

How so?

Berman took somebody else's established and successful idea and ran with it ...

Roddenberry had the original idea that started it all. I know who I credit most ...

Berman, like Braga, Piller, Taylor etc. made their contribution to the furthering of Star Trek. They join a long list of people who did this (including the actors). But without Roddenberry they would have had nothing to work upon and we probably would never have heard of them - unless it was working on Babylon 5.

It sickens me the continual desire some people have to spread a kind of revisionist philosphy on this forum. Roddenberry was not perfect. He made mistakes - with people, with stories, even with Trek itself on occasion - but so what? If you cannot distinguish the difference between those that create the spark that others use - and these others that use it, then there is not a lot of hope for you.

I suppose you think that West Side Story is better than the original dusty old play written by some forgotten bard from a few hundred years ago? You may well do so - and you are entitled - but don't forget who thought it up in the first place!

I wouldn't say Berman deserves MORE praise than Gene, but he certaintly deserves a lot! Recently I've come to accept that he kept the franchise on a directed path throughout his entire involvemnet, and perhaps the most important thing in a franchise this long-lived is direction. Without it, what's the point of having story and willing resources if you don't know how to applly them?
