Quark changed my opinion about the Ferengi - in a good way. Because I liked Quark so much, I liked other Ferengi better as well!

I used to have no time for the Ferengi, I'd skip their centric episodes. Quark however is so hilarious especially interacting with Odo. Now I have a soft spot for him

As was the case with the Borg, I actually preferred the original concept for the Ferengi over what they later became. When we first saw the Ferengi in TNG they were essentially space pirates--bold, brash, aggressive, and quite capable fighters despite their size. As someone else already pointed out, they had some very interesting and original looking ships that I too would have liked to have seen used again in DS9. I also thought their energy whips where really cool and unique. It's such a shame that all three original concepts were abandoned in favor of stereotyping pretty much the whole race as sniveling cowards and/or bumbling idiots to use them as little more then comic relief.
Personally, I would have much rather seen them take the Ferengi in a far more serious direction. I think it would have been really cool if they had patterned the Ferengi after 16th century England, particularly in regard to their naval traditions and their colonization, taxation and exploitation practices that caused so many to turn privateer or full-blown pirate. There is such a rich and complex history there that could have been used as a pattern to create one of the most interesting and diverse races ever seen in Star Trek. But we got what we got, so I guess there is no point whining about it now.
All that said, I have to admit that I did become quite fond of Quark, his family and even some of the other reoccurring Ferengi characters. I just wish that the Ferengi had been used more often for something other then silly slapstick comedy.

I LOVE QUARK!! HE IS NOT MY FAVORITE CHARACTER BUT HE ADDS A "COMIC RELIEF" THAT IS PAR EXCELLENCE! i THINK THAT THE FERENGI DRIVE FOR "AQUISITIONS" IS THE EPITOME OF CAPITALISM AT ITS FINEST. QUARK REFLECTS THEIR DISGUSTING DRIVE FOR WEALTH IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE ONLY THING YOU CAN DO IS SHAKE YOUR HEAD AND LAUGH!
i ENJOY THEIR "RULES OF AQUISITION", ONE OF MY FAVORITE BEING: "HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS, BUT THE STARS ARE MADE OF LATINUM!"
I HOPE I REMEMBERED IT CORRECTLY!

Yes, you're right. Quark changed over the course of the series. And, all the Ferengi became more-normal to us other races.

Loved when quark and rom went to ferenginar to visit moogie! Awesome sets and the constant pouring rain. Every thing was circular, the beds the doorways. The rules of acquisition were so clever, along with the idea of the divine treasury. The ferengi species was the best in dsnine but also the false profits episode in voyager.
Long live the little trolls!

Loved Quark! I think that the writers were looking for a comedic side when they created Quark. He didn't really do anything influential, but I loved the laughs he added to the show!
It always comes down to profit with you people, doesn't it?

I saw a video of Armin Shimerman (Quark) in England, teaching the students how to act in a Shakespearean play! So, the man is definitely very intelligent and talented! He's not just a pretty face!
Again, I love the exchange between Quark and Elim Garak on DS9. It's a classic!

when he talks to people it makes me want to cover my nose. I feel like his breath would reek.
"Well, This is a new ship, but she's got the right name. Now you remember that, you hear?"
"I will, sir."
"You treat her like a lady, and she'll always bring you home."
