Are Star Trek fans Starfleet material?

I think the distinction must be made between "officer / academy graduate" and "enlisted."

I'm sure there's a percentage of Star Trek fans who could "enlist" in Starfleet and do adequately. However, from a Starfleet Academy standpoint, that is an institution that only selects the "best of the best."

Think of it like West Point or Annapolis in that there are a very limited number of appointments to those academys. You need to have specific elements on your application where you can prove EXCELLENCE in multiple dimensions to get in (overall high grades / test scores, stand-out involvement in extra-curriculars, attainment of leadership roles such as varsity athletics captain) and you need a sponsor (which we know is true in Starfleet as well). Since there are only so many openings in each academy class, and since that institution is open to all the Federation races...I have a feeling that VERY FEW Star Trek fans would qualify. Sure, there would be a SMALL percentage...but the numbers just aren't in favor especially based on the folks I've encountered in my journey as a fan.

^ I was wondering when you'd chime in Vger.  I'm actually shocked.  i was expecting a far more grim evaluation of fans and their abilites.

Well, I think given the fact that we'd all fantasize at some time or other about being on the command staff of a starship or space station in the final frontier...I think it IS a grim assessment.

That being said, there are some BRILLIANT Star Trek fans out there (one or two I've met on this board    ) who would truthfully probaby be excellent members of starfleet because of their abilities and accomplishments. I just think that's a more rare exception than some of us would like to think!

BTW, if you haven't read my space shuttle stories from the past few days in the technology area, you might find some interesting bits.

>I was at a convention once and someone asked Kate Mulgrew how Janeway was different to her, and she said for one Janeway was much braver

>

That actually reminds me of a similar interview with Sigourney Weaver (on the Galaxy Quest DVD I think) where she said something very similar -- along the lines of if she were ever in the same situation as Ellen Ripley, she would probably never survive! But of course there's another layer to Weaver's perspective because in Galaxy Quest she's playing more like the "Kate Mulgrew" than the "Janeway" angle.

In a Federation setting, I don't think I would be in Starfleet -- even enlisted. Might have said something similar before. But whatever talents I possess are more in the artsy vein, and I would probably end up working towards the same career as I am trying to work towards now -- as a writer (like Jake Sisko -- although that is the only context in which you will ever hear me utter the words "like Jake Sisko" right.)

I have no fantasies to sit in the captain's chair. The command dep't types don't even interest me that much. (Science, Engineering, Medicine -- the types of characters who enter those dep'ts are of greater interest to me than the captains are.)

You bring up a great point, if the likes of him can pass then I'm sure the majority of people here could.

@OtakuJo, I agree with your second paragraph, though would probably be enlisted if given the chance, but I'd prefer to pursue that same career as I am now, which is whole jumbled mix of things - Architectual, interior, and industrial designer. Basically I just want to make things. Doubtful I'd ever be a high ranking officer even in Engineering or Science.

Psh...I'd apply for the Inspector General's office. Boss people around without any sort of exposure to danger? Sounds right up my alley.

I might be, but I would eventually get kicked out because of holodeck addiction.

Which is exactly why I plan on becoming an officer in the Air Force.

That's the thing isn't it? For my part, it would be interesting to interact with people in the Star Trek / 24C setting, but I lack all desire to be in any kind of military -- Starfleet included.

Hence why I picked the Inspector General Office. I don't think you'd hav an audit in the middle of combat.

I can make jokes like that because I am an auditor.
