At the end of the movie, When Picard was rescued, why didn't they beam up Kirk's remains so the Federation and Starleet could give him a better funeral? If anyone says that they might have, the fact that they didn't show that suggests to me that Kirk was left behind on that lonely world

Kirk deserved a lot of things that he didn't get, especially in Generations.

He never should have been killed at all.

It was a cheap gimmick and shock tactic.

Paramount were insane to give it the green light.

I'm reading The Return at the moment.

This helps address that issue ...

I liked that one too but the whole Shatnerverse does get somewhat ridiculous at times.

Fully agree, and I've only read The Return.

As awesome as Kirk is, It's hard for me to imagine...

SPOILER

...the Kirk from Generations besting Worf in Bat'leth combat, or being seduced by a Romulan.

If I remember, the book addresses the issue by saying Picard couldn't figure the ramifications and complications of revealing to Starfleet that Kirk was alive, only to die once more.

If not, I think it was the comic book Countdown where Picard says this to Spock. Either way, Picard is basically lieing in a report to Starfleet, all to avoid paperwork? Or perhaps it is out of some misguided since of respect towards Kikr. Either way, it seems just wrong (not morally mind you) to leave Kirk, the most famous figure in Starfleet of the 23rd Century, covered by rocks on a deserted planet. That was never right in my eyes and it never will be.

The Shat having a bit of wish fulfilment huh?

A thought:

Did Picard make it known to Starfleet that Kirk had helped him in the fight with Soran? (Actually he probably did -- but I'm just putting it out there.)

Also, official funeral, medal presentation, treaty signing, or ceremony scenes in movies generally end up being pretty tacky. Which I suppose many would argue that Generations is anyway... But there you have it.

No scene with Kirk's coffin getting shot out of the arse of a starship. Oh well.

Kirk is Shatner and Shatner is Kirk. As far as I am concerned following the demise of Roddenberry - the life, future and everything else about J.T.K. should rest with the man who breathed life into him ...

Kirk is more than Shatner, Kirk is Trek. Just Like Batman is more than Bob Kane, or Spider-Man is Stan Lee. When you are a prominent character is such a famous franchise, you have to be willing to accept knew interpretations.

The film was poorly made and thought out.
Kirk's involvement in it was as mentioned above was a cheap shot at shock.
And it would have never had happened if it was not for Shatner's own self perceived lust of being James T. Kirk one more time and if the studio had the confidence as it did with TOS to allow TNG to move out on it's own.
TNG should had ended as it did on TV and Kirk's death never seen as to remain a mystery to all.
And it is true, that our Honored dead are brought home..which might not explain why Spock was stuffed into a torpedo tube and shot out into space. Then of course if he wasn't we might not have gotten Spock back at all.
But being science fiction, they would have found another way to bring Spock back then the one w saw in STIII

I agree. Kirk did deserve a better funeral. However, he shouldn't have died. I watched the film yesterday and requested Return and Avenger from the library. Generations is still my favorite ST movie.

This would have been me at the GEN production meeting...

Berman: OK, in this new movie, we are going to kill Kirk

HRH: Whoa whoa....you are going to kill Kirk? WHY?

Berman: Because we need to pass the torch.

HRH: It was passed in "Encounter At Farpoint". Remember when McCoy gave the Enterprise-D his blessing?

Berman: -blank stare-

HRH: Rick? Are you OK?

Braga: Well I thin....

HRH: Shut up Brannon.

Braga: ok

HRH: So back to Kirk.....OK let's say he dies, he's going to get a heroic farewell at Starfleet HQ right? With a state funeral and then lay him to rest in Iowa, celebrated as one of the greatest officers in Starfleet history, right?

Berman: No, we cover his corpse with some rocks and then quickly move to celebrating the fact that Spot The Cat has survived.

HRH: OK, that's it, I've had enough.

-screams ensue and people yell "oh my god, he's got a gun!!!!"

-police sirens wail-
