As Spock would say, "the question is illogical".  Anyone who is a Star Trek fan and has watched the tv shows and movies knows that Kirk made out with every woman he ran across and ran into ex-girlfriends all the time.  We met his son David in the Wrath of Khan.  Spock who followed Vulcan traditions only went into Pon Farr every 7 years and their mates were chosen by their families.  He had some romantic encounters also such as in the shows "Paradise Syndrome" and in the "Enterprise Incident".  Kirk is his best friend and commander and he is very loyal to him.

This is an article about fan-fiction.

Looks like K/S fanfiction is known in the 'real-world'

I think Treknoir pointed us to the same article earlier in this thread (p.13.) -- but cheers. Yes, it's a good one.

My great uncle is married with two kids, and very likely gay... But in any case I wouldn't claim anything about Mr Spiner...

OF course not! Why would you even suggest that? There isn't any good evidence behind that statement. Find me some and i'd believe you but until then anyone who suggest that is completely and utterly worng.

Still Kirk and Spock being gay or not has nothing to do with the actors who portray them. I'm amused by the 'gay' discussion about Kirk and Spock but think its different when you refer to the actors.

Agreed although I don't think it ought to be viewed as something offensive. Just, correct or not. It's like the weird realm of real-person fanfic which I don't like to touch with a twenty foot pole. (Even though a lot of real people have been portrayed as sci-fi characters... Lincoln & Twain on Star Trek, Wells on Lois and Clark, Dickens & Christie on Doctor Who, to name a few... Hey I just noticed most of those are writers lol) Things do get iffy when real and particularly not-dead people are involved.

And when some people assume that X can't be gay because the actor is straight... it's perfectly natural to have gay actors playing straight characters, and vice versa. That's what actors do! They play characters different to themselves ne.

ps. Only reason I remembered the link being mentioned before was that at the time it set me off on quite a long and informative reading spree on the various links.

pps. I'm still a little unsure on which is a "Yes" vote and which a "No" vote in the above poll.

I truly believe this debate will never end. I have come to the conclusion that deep down, Gene and whom ever else who help create Star Trek never intended to make it look like they were gay. I truly believe that. I think what happened, and this is due to the fact that Spock, for all intense and purposes was to be a minor character. And that Shatner who played Kirk would be the star.

Something happened though. The fans who got a glimpse of the alien character adored him. I did as well. Shatner got jealous, that Lenny was getting more and more fan mail. This was getting serious.

Isaac Asimov I heard somehow said that if these two characters would form a special friendship the animosity that Shatner felt towards his co-star would decrease because by liking Spock, and that Jim was being his friend, he would also be liked in return.

So they became the best team ever after ..and the fan mail evened out.

About the slash aspect, remember this did not start in the States, but in the UK.  Somewhere in the early 70's after the show was in syndication mostly women saw soemthing more between them. And started to write stories. Do you honestly think that this would have been accepted back then. Of course not. The women who did write the stories passed it among other fans who felt the same way. It was like an underground thing, and it eventually surfaced.

Eventually spreading to the States and beyond. There are slash fans all around the world. It isn't limited to the US. As far away as Nepal.

I am and will always be a STAR TREK fan first. And I understand how you hate us for saying the contrary about their relationship.

1. I agree there are not gay.

2. Is there some subtext (like how they look at each other, the phrases they've said to each other example Miri...Yes, I believe there is.

3. Are they secret lovers? No. We never saw them doing anything on screen. If they had we woudn't be having this discussion.

4. Is it canon?  My answer...I don't care either way.

5. Do they love each other. Of course they do.

And everyone is going to scream at me ...saying we've been telling u this all along ...there are friends who love each other period.

And I agree with that.....but I can't help seeing them more than friends...but that is my fantasy, and that is all it is,,,as every other slash fan. That is all we do have, a fantasy of them being more than friends.

Unless the reboot Star Trek changes everything, which I doubt.

Peace everyone xoxoxox

@TrueSpock- Canon was a word I came upon when I had just discovered Kirk/Spock. I had no idea what it meant...What is this canon they talk about. So, the many Kirk/Spock fans, who keep telling everyone that it is canon, I just said...sure whatever.

But canon for the Star Trek I watched ..there are a lot of things that contradict. One being Jim's brother Sam. Did he have three brothers...they say he does...but we see later in the episode Operation...that he doesn't.

I feel like I am split my friend..I love both Star Trek as you do....I've been reading the pocket books from way back...this one I  am reading at the moment..is The Rift by Peter David. There is no slash in there...nor am I looking for it. I accept it as it is.

And when I leave the Star Trek I watched when I was little..I slip into another universe and read slash...

Try to understand that it's just something that I have enjoyed for the past few years. I may decide I don't care for it anymore in six months..for the moment I am happy having two places to visit...

Peace, mon ami...

Well, that would be awkward, wouldn't it? If they were gay, I mean.

James T. Kirk was born in 2233 in Riverside, Iowa.[1] He was raised there by his parents, George and Winona Kirk.[2] Although born on Earth, Kirk for a time lived on Tarsus IV, where he was one of nine surviving witnesses to the massacre of 4,000 colonists by Kodos the Executioner.[1] James Kirk's brother George Samuel Kirk is first mentioned in "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" and introduced and killed in "Operation: Annihilate!", leaving behind three children.[1]

And???That only states that his brother Sam left behind 3 kids when he died.

I repeat, where was it ever said that Kirk had 3 brothers?

And for the record,. nothing in TOS or the films ever directly claims James T was born on earth.

Forgive me, I meant to say that it was stated in the episode WALGMO? Sam had three kids and then in Operation...there is only Peter. Where is my brain.....gone for sure...

But, Jim did say to Gillian that he was from Iowa and only worked in outer space.
