I wrote a review of my favourite films, TV, books etc from 2010 last December. I enjoyed doing it so much that I've started working my way back reviewing a year each month and have reached 2001 and so accordingly here are my thoughts on the end of Star Trek: Voyager (and the beginning of Enterprise):

My first thought about Voyager:  Failure.

The poor quality of the show essentially got the franchise off TV.

There needed to be more T&A in Voyager ...

... so much more.

Onwards to the year 2000 and the only calendar year in which Voyager flew solo, with the latter half of its sixth season and the first half of its seventh (I've also included the brilliant Deep Space Nine Companion):

They should have wrapped it up Galactica style and showed some aftermath, where do people go from here, etc. Hell, I think it would have been awesome to see Voyager go up in a fireball, giving her life for the crew. But I wouldn't let the Captain go down with her ship; Chakotay beams her out at the last second.

Then they can get a new Voyager with glitter and sparklies and a nice letter A after the NCC registry. Of course this type of ending would have only worked if the ship didn't have the magic reset button in between episodes, another contrast of Galactica and Voyager.

In a similar vein, I loved how BSG had so many side characters besides the main bridge crew and lead pilots. We got to see the little guys and their adventures and there was a strong continuity with them. Only a few people like Vorik and Carey had some history and I would have loved to see more focus on the lower decks.

Overall, VOY is my #3 series next to #2 TNG and #1 TOS

Pretty much my only gripe with Voyager was killing off Lieutenant Carey so close to the end of the season.

It's very odd.

Carey's appearance is used as shorthand in Relativity and Fury to help the audience to flashback to Season 1 or earlier, so you could be forgiven for thinking he was dead. Then along along comes Friendship One and it turns out he was alive all along and having an unremarkable career, presumably he's doing all the shifts in Engineering when Torres isn't there...

I enjoyed Voyager. I was use to TOS and TNG being everywhere. The action of a ship. Though I liked DS9, it was too "stable" at first and I enjoyed the action of Voyager with a ship being a co star again. As with all the shows, there are problems and things I liked and didn't like, my overall feel of the show was that it was a good show with a good crew, though Neelix could have been written differently. I liked it and enjoy watching it to this day.

Yeah, it only took 11 years for this 7 season series to get Trek off TV... wait, what?!?

Voyager was going to be cancelled after season three, but Paramount had to save face as they invested so much money in VOY as the lynch pin of the now defunct network.

The only way Paramount was going to cut their loses on this was to do the obligatroy seven seasons and try to make up money via DVD sales.

If that were true, Enterprise would never have existed...

I enjoyed Voyager because it explored uncharted and dangerous territory.  It proved a woman was perfectly capable of commanding a ship and commanding respect from her crew.  It showed that peace and mutual cooperation WAS effective and even contagious in a lawless realm.  It was, in my opinon, just as great an exercise in showing the human spirit as TOS or TNG.

The latter half of Voyager's fifth season and the former half of its sixth (as well as the end of Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Insurrection) in my favourite things from 1999:
