Pulled to the center of the Galaxy while investigating the theory of creation the 1701 encounters a devil like creature which leads the crew to experiment with magic.Taking exception to this a near by planet Megas-Tu begins a Witch hunt.

How many literary and mythological references can we place in one episode? And of course only the great James T. Kirk could redeem the Devil himself. Still, despite Spock's seance and some of the more rediculous elements in this episode, if it were a live action episode it would still be better than "Who Mourns for Adonis."
That seemed overly critical, I still like the episode.

Reminds me of the exchange at the end if "The Apple" in TOS.

This was the God Compromise. They weren't allowed to do an episode about God, but could do one about the devil.....go figure.

I've only watched TAS through all the way once, and this was a standout... I'm so suprised at the depth of these episodes.

I quite liked this one - I liked its reference to historical persecution of anyone with different or superior ability - and by making a 'goodie' of Lucifer it also takes on the Church's often-hypocritical condemnation of people doing things they enjoy

I think I enjoyed this episode the most. I find the plot really intriguing and there's a great voice work in that show!

Why would it be okay to do an episode about the devil, but not God? Just wondering what was going on in the mind of those TV execs...

Keeping the show/network on the air I should imagine - some Christians are both difficult to please and in positions of power...it wasn't until three decades later with STV that they were prepared to say that maybe 'God' was just one more alien
Anyway the episode wasn't 'about' Lucifer it was about how people simplify things they don't understand by describing things as 'magic' etc
There are lots of 'gods' in it, who are generally benign - they're just scared of persecution.

isn't that fight scene the one where the episode suddenly cuts to it mid-fight from another scene, ie you don't actually see the initial attack? - it always struck me as a bit odd the way they did that - i wondered if something had spoilt the shot and they didn't have time to shoot it again?
