>"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. Already they have raised up a monied aristocracy that has set the government at defiance. The issuing power (of money) should be taken away from the banks and restored to the people to whom it properly belongs." — Thomas Jefferson, U.S. President.

Agreed.  This is why I hate the Federal Reserve.  (Remember, he fought against Alexander Hamilton in the creation of the First Bank of the USA.)

But we also have to look at the definition of "bank" - it's completely different now than it was a few hundred years ago.  Back then, banks could issue their own money, which is very dangerous.  Nowadays, banks can't do that, but they do provide a valuable service.

"In 1909, Aldrich introduced a constitutional amendment to establish an income tax, although he had declared a similar measure "communistic" a decade earlier. In 1908 he became the chief sponsor of the Aldrich-Vreeland Act which created the National Monetary Commission, later to become the Federal Reserve in 1913.

Aldrich became wealthy with investments in street railroads, sugar, rubber and banking. In 1906 Aldrich and other American financiers invested heavily in mines and rubber in the Belgian Congo. They supported Belgium's King Leopold II, who was alleged to have imposed slave labor conditions in the colony."

Yup, good old Nelson Aldrich. Businessman, entrepreneur, and the man who became the chief sponsor of the act which created what would eventually become the Federal Reserve. There you have it folks, the quintessential "progressive".

And just for the record, here are the stated objectives of the Federal Reserve when it was created:

1) Stop growing competition from the nation's newer banks
2) Obtain franchise to create money out of nothing for the purpose of lending
3) Get control of all banks' reserves
4) Shift the losses from the bankowners to taxpayers
5) Convince Congress that the purpose was to protect the public.

Well, for what its worth, there are many on the left who have been arguing for greater accountability on the part of the Fed for quite some time now.

Just read tonight:

As end of the day on 3 October, Obama has increased the debt more in 32.5 months than all presidents from George Washington through George H.W. Bush COMBINED!!!  This means that the total debt for the first 204 years of our nation (under the US Constitution) is less than Obama's first 32.5 months...

(According to the Treasury, total national debt was $4.1672 trillion at the end of Bush 41's presidency and under Obama, the debt has increased $4.212 trillion so far.)

Too bad Obama and others more conservative than Obama have failed to repeal tax breaks for the rich and continued wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Too bad we don't kill all unConstitutional spending - that'd take care of about 70% of the Federal spending and then we could pay off the debt and free up capitalism.

And here's yet another one:

A Tennessee company called Mountain Plaza Inc. that received $424,000 in a stimulus fund grant has gone completely broke.

But wait! It gets better.

The company qualified for the taxpayer-funded stimulus grant even after it had filed for bankruptcy.

I love cookies, but i never had one that costs 10 bucks. I wish i could get something else for 1 dollar an ounce, but the yuppies would rather me get a DWI. I had muffin the other night, but it wasnt bread. It was warm though. my meatballs are Chech and Scottish, not sweedish... sorry. I dont know what a beef wellington is, but if I was a porn star that would be my name. Hi, I am fukin Beef Wellington. hors d'oeuvres would be the porn club I open. Candy bars are really just stripper clubs. I'm in the midst of a trauma.......... The dream is dead.

I express rage that jobs that should be going to Americans are being outsourced, and you try to dismiss it.
