A few weeks ago DST announced new retro TNG dolls after a dry spell of no new Trek products for a long time.  They didn't seem to be well received.  Should Diamond Select make more Trek figures?  Would their investment have a financial return?  Please make your case and be ready to debate it.

Here are the responses on facebook:

The appeal is for those of us who collected Mego figures in the past: the costumes usually were ill-fitting (though you could swap them between figures), but they were cool. Nothing beat Super-Batman.
Why not just redo the Playmates figures with better articulation - the uniforms were better and the sculpts weren't that bad --   WOW! These look... like CRAP!
Diamond used to make actual Star Trek action figures, but they stopped part way through DS9. Clearly these are cheaper to produce because they look like crap.
Uniform looks great, fits like a charm, and that phaser is undoubtably the larger size specially for a captain.   Looks like something straight out of a Robot Chicken skit. LOL!
I think we have all reached a conclusion. An ugly Picard in an ugly sweater holding a phaser the size of my foot is not worth $20. So what would you do with the $20 you didn't spend on this     It seems most would agree. Fail.     Has anyone even seen the original Mego models from the 70s? This is pretty spot on! However, what would really make these "retro" would be to have them made in the USA. That uniform has got to be a practical joke.OMG crap or what. They are really going to sell these, the quality on these I mean come on. They should give them away eh they look really shitty for Diamond select quality. god i love thier ships but these figs look crapy. i'm getting theb org though to go with my Cub I think I know what Robot Chicken will do with those!
Still waiting on the Sisko in the Command chair from Diamond Select that was cancelled a few years back!!!! The Diamond Select figures were way more awesome than these DOLLS!
*sigh* You know you're old when Next Gen is considered retro ... ROFL The only thing that could make this doll crappier would be to put a Ken doll's head on it, but with Picard's hair. Come on! My old 70's bearded G.I. Joe looked better. Art Asylum knew how to make great action figures, why not dolls. The people at CBS who vetoed this are smoking some serious crack.     Mego =/= Retro. and btw, better hope Mattel doesn't see this post/line. They already have enough legal troubles and suing DST/Paramount will help alleviate their finances! (but they'll still keep jacking prices every quarter!)     The Borg one looks like a KISS doll!     I was 24 when that show premiered! "Retro" indeed! >:-(
Those look terrible, the Picard figure looks more like Terence O'Quinn than Patrick Stewart and the uniform doesn't even fit properly. $20? I wouldn't pay $2 for the pair.
Finally Barbie can be assimilated!
Yeah, they look kinda like crap.
Can't wait for these. Hope they make a bunch more.
It's updates like these that make me reconsider liking Star Trek on Facebook
Excellent, they look great.
What is this I don't even. No seriously. Hideous is the nicest word I can think of.
I bet if I get riker he will be getting busy with my daughters barbie when I'm not lookin

You all are idiots. It's made this way intentionally to pay homage to the original Star Trek TOS action figures. They had terrible fitting uniforms with moderate sculpt. THATS why they're "retro". Not because it's TNG.
Picards breast enlargement operation was a success.
I agree with the "this is why it's called retro comments". The Diamond figures are supposed to have that unkempt awkward build 1970s Trek action figure look. Long live retro! w00t!
I like the borg, nice try anyway, they surley can do better September 2 at 10:44am ·
By 'Retro' do they mean crappy? September 2 at 10:57am ·
Wow, are they making figures for the sole purpose of Robot Chicken episodes now? Where the hell are the Excelsior and E-B that we got a peek at years ago?? September 2 at 11:06am ·
Well that's the last time Picard lets Wesley take his shirt to the dry cleaners.... September 2 at 11:30am ·
Id rather see Diamond finish the regular toy line with a Voyager set. September 2 at 11:33am ·
There are times - and I think one of those times is now - when "retro" needs to stay in the past. September 2 at 12:09pm · · 1 person

Fail. I'm 100% against idea. Besides their appearance, and price tag, TNG was not made in the 70s. And MEGO toys was long gone when TNG premiered. To do toys based on another line, of which there actually is nostalgia for, is a waste of time, $, and energy. I'd rather see the classic line finished in this retro style. Then have thay be it. If anything, return to original line continuations, Diamond, or continue the classic TNG toys. But stay away from this idea. This reminds me of neewer fanboys glomming on to collecting the classic 70s/80s Kenner Star Wars toys. You didn't live thru that time. Get your own toys. I don't even like the newer characters they are doing on classic style SW cards. So I def don't agree with this venture. And btw, the old Mego outfits on, say, Spock, fit way better than the above. September 2 at 12:32pm ·
DIAMOND TRIED TO MAKE TNG DOLLS .COCKED UP IN THE PROCESS.THEN SOMEBODY SAID "LET'S CALL 'EM RETRO" September 2 at 1:16pm · · 1 person
I cant just imagine the kind of people i am seeing here, no nigerians September 2 at 2:12pm · Complete crap. We want more 6" figures, not dolls. Everyone needs to email customerservice@diamondselecttoys.com, tell them to cut the crap and give us what we want. September 2 at 2:32pm ·
Terrible idea. Diamond Select was doing great until they started teasing us with advance sales then not even making the figures. Like someone recently said. Now I can use my money for something else. Sad :-( September 2 at 2:52pm ·
The way Picard's phaser is positioned, if it goes off accidentally the family line really WILL end with him! September 2 at 2:58pm ·
‎*Crosses fingers* Please let there be a Tomalak figure. He was one of the best villains in TNG.
Well I think all the hates should go evacuate themselves out of an airlock. As a boy I had the original figures, and these are the first ones in a long time to actually look like trek figures to me. Great Job guys, keep up the good work!
Yeah these look like shart!

I don't mind them making the Mego figures, but I wish they'd make some normal honest-to-god figures as well.

No one wants more figures, eh? Perhaps DST is making the right business decision.

I'm with you MR.  Where are my Voyager figures!?  DST has a bad habit of annoucing toys, just to have them never come out.  I would have bought the USS Excelsior or Sisko w/captain's chair in a heartbeat, but DST dangled the carrot in front of my face and nothing more.  More recently, I got excited about the Nemesis Enterprise, but the release date has been pushed back so many times I've given up hope.  I want to give DST my money; why don't they want to take it?

DST usually does great toys, but the problem is Trek was under a bit of a dry spell until the JJ movie and now the common public expects the new, flashy characters. 24th Century Trek isn't the "in" thing and the characters are only going to be bought by the hard core fans right now...a niche in a niche.

I think after the release of STO and ST09, the market is ripe for more figures.  DST just doesn't care to try. They've made molds of 7 of 9, Sisko with captain's chair, the borg queen, and others.  Sure the recesion cut sales for awhile but Trek fans are primed and ready to spend again.  Ezri figures go for over $100 bucks when they pop up on ebay.  Don't tell me Janeway and Seven figures wouldn't sell.

Unfortunately, I can't get enthusiasm from fans to write in en masse.  Trek fans don't seem to have the enthusiasm for trek causes they once had; none of that spirit to rename a space shuttle anymore.  We couldn't even beat out Big Head Todd in a contest for the song to wake up a space shuttle crew.

I hear ya! People because of the economy are more mindful of their cash. I lost my last job because of the economy and the job I am working at now, let's just say I made more money on unemployment than I do working, but I surely can't stay on unemployment forever...

But, I do believe those who are passionate will buy, but until this country gets out of it's financial rut, we perhaps won't see the same spending from collectors. DST would be wise to strike the iron when it's hot and have some preppeed and ready to roll around the launch of the next film.

Janeway? I sure would buy! Actually that Sisko in the command chair sounds awesome and kinda sexy... Why does Ezri go for so much? Did she have a low print run?

Ezri and the First Contact Data pop up on ebay once and ahile and go for a lot because of a short production run.  That and Ezri comes with the TR-116 rifle.  I think the Ezri fig doesn't do Nicole Deboer justice but I like the gun.

I wanted a Mackenzie Calhoun so I made some adjustments to a Bashir fig, reshaping the face a bit, repainting, and adding a scar.
