I've never watched it because I didn't know Star Trek had an animated series. Is it better than the live action version of TOS?

No of course not, but as it has the original cast and lots of TOS-related storylines it's definitely worth watching - i'm most of the way through now and i have to say that i do agree with some that it's a little 'talky' and some of the stories are a little silly, but it's still good and the best episodes are better than some TOS shows

If you like TOS then yes. They used some left over scrips from TOS for it and had the same writers to make up the rest. The original actors did the voices. Other than mediocre animation and some cheesy soundtracks it really is TOS just in animated form, as far as I am concerned.

TAS is the last series i have to watch.  I usually hate animated stuff, but its only two seasons and since its Star Trek I think I can get threw it, just for the sake of being able to say that I've seen all the series

It had a few good episodes like Yesteryear, but a lot of it was a little dumb. Kirk and spock get put in a zoo on a artificial planet be giant caterpillars.

I recomend you look up the best ones online, and just watch those.

Worth seeing if you have never seen it although the limitations above in earlier posts clearly apply.

I say give it watch.  From a historical perspective of the franchise alone I think its worth you giving it a try.  It is my least favorite of all series but I'm glad I sat down and gave them a watch.

Back then it sure beat The Smurfs and GI JOE! And it still holds up! Many of the stories such as "Slaver Weapon" and "Jihad" are equal to or better than some of the live action stuff ("Spock's Brain", "And The Children Shall Lead" for examples). Ignore the sometimes cheesy animation just as you ignore the Mugato and concentrate on the STORY. That's what really matters, after all.

I think TAS is worth the watch because it does capture the feel of TOS. I have the box set and I still like to watch it.

Yes, definitely watch.  I own the set and I ran to the store to buy it when it was released (I was thrilled).

Two pluses about the series:  1. All voices are done by original cast.

2. Stories are good and are supposed to be a continuation of the live series.

Just keep in mind (as another poster said above) that this cartoon series was done right after the TOS show of the 60"s went off the air, so the animation is very different then what we are used to today.

The animation has little movement and halts alot.  Children (and adults) had to use their imaginations to enjoy these older-style cartoons.

Just think of each episode as a moving comic book and you will enjoy.  Pay attention to the story rather than the images.

And also enjoy the real actors voices, straight from coming out of the cancellation of the original series.

A real treat, for that very reason.

Well, whatever it is, just watch cause it's Star Trek. But I think we should watch TOS first. We might as well compare TOS with TAS when watching. TAS has got something more like a crackpot.

I think it's one of the best cartoon shows ever made. Anybody agree?

My other favorite cartoon show is the 1980s D&D animated series.
