TOS - Season Four!

Not including the animated series, its interesting to speculate on what `Star Trek' would have been like if it had lasted for 2 more seasons (no more than that though, based on the `less is more' principle). What would you like to have seen in a 4th season? For me, it would have been good to either bring back Janice Rand, or have a new female crewmember as a regular, perhaps a female alien. The title sequence would be the same, except the credits would be in red. I think, as the 70s dawned, the look of the show would have changed a bit - Kirk's sideburns would have become a lot more bushy. If id been in charge of the show at that point, i would have introduced new recurring enemies - say, a race who resemble giant hairy spiders with humanoid heads (an updated sort of `Zanti Misfits' from the `Outer Limits') - i can just imagine them on the bridge of their ship, all panels with a `web' design - and a race who look like living skeletons. I would have had some continuing story arcs, for example, a run of eps where the Enterprise accidentally enters another, stranger universe. This would result in 5 or 6 eps with the ship encountering particularly weird phenomena and aliens/planets, before they find a way back to their universe. We would definitely have found out Sulu and Uhura's first names, and there would have been showcase eps for all the characters. I would have had more 2 parters too.

I would've liked it if a 4th season did more of what the movies did, get more personal with the characters. And just get deeper into everything. Sometimes TOS could just be somewhat vague. Not bad, but just vague and all over the place. I enjoy TOS, but I love the TOS films. All 6 of them.

Whats wrong with my ideas? (apart from `Nothing') - Some bloody good ones there, better than a lot of what they did in the show. I take it from your comment that you arent much of a fan of the other ST shows then, as TNG etc were more into 2 parters, story arcs etc.

Actually, NO-ONE will be writing any more episodes for TOS.

I guess it would have needed somebody to get to grips with the stories as some of the plots in season 3 were a bit lame.

Read the Star Trek Phase II [the lost series] book by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens. That gives an indication how the story was supposed to have continued (albeit several years later).

Returning to the actual TOS the studio would have needed to have invested more money into it and they seemed disinclined to do so. The historic legacy of Star Trek and its continual renewal in other forms is hugely ironic when you consider how little faith NBC had in it, and how they tried to kill it off themselves. But isn't that always the case? Great art is rarely recognised by its contemporaries.

Spouter's points are valid. I reckon we would have needed to see more character develpment, particularly of the minor players. TNG did this on occasion. It would have been good to see a story focussed around Uhura or Chekov etc. TOS didn't go in for story arcs but in those days very few shows did. Had they gone down that route with a developing background story (the build-up to war with Klingons or Romulans for example) and also introduced some two-parters that would have been interesting. TOS only ever had one two-parter and that was because the reuse of The Cage material allowed for it - it wasn't planned that way.

TOS just wasn't planned that way. It became a battle for survival against the ratings. In later years the producers had the luxury of knowing the studio was prepared to consider the long-term strategy - hence the now stereotypical season finale cliff-hanger we are all used to. Back then, sadly, that kind of thinking just wasn't there.

I certainly respect your opinion but I just bought the absolute "best of" for Blu Ray....Season One of the Series and Movies II and VI.

I have everything else in "standard DVD" play.

Oh...my opinion of season 4...if the writing was going to continue to decline...so would season 4...but you may have gotten new talent(s) cheap looking to write a few shows....and who knows...a few gems worthy of the first couple of seasons may have been created.

If you do your research, and or are as ancient as I, you would know a fourth season of TOS series was already in the planning stages.
This would have included new and refurbished sets and designs...Captain Koloth of "The Trouble with Tribbles" would have appeared as Kirks adversary as a continue character. Mention is also made that Kor would have returned also.
And in a particularly old article I once recalled McCoy being giving a love interest...I think it was McCoy, could have been Scotty.
Wonder how Shatner would have reacted to that!!!
Had NBC switched to the new Nelson Rating System a few weeks earlier, it would have been discovered that Star Trek was indeed a hit series with the target audience they wanted, a fourth season would have happened and Star Trek history as we know it would mostly likely be completely different then it is now.
After TOS was canceled it was briefly proposed to create a spin of series about Spock's life on Vulcan, I only just read about that and had never heard of it before this.
Now if any of those ideas could be found and located for the pre-planning of the fourth season it would be fun and interesting for them to incorporate some of them into the new time line.

Season four of TOS would have seen some interesting things provided that; the money was there.  Had the series continued we would have seen Dr. McCoy and Spock continue their battle of verbal jabs, Chekov would have moved up in rank, Yeoman Rand return and be a challenge for Kirk and his obsession with Enterprise, more battles with the Romulans, the destruction of another starship (new weapon of Romulan design), the return of the Andorians as an annoyed friend, and much more use of the shuttlecrafts in missions.

TOS was done in by the rating system. If they had made it to a 4th season and the new Nielsen rating system, NBC would have realized how popular the show was and put more money into it the way they did Mission Impossible.

Take three

Take two..... agian :: sigh::

Would have loved to see them go onto season 4, but I agree that if they continued as they were that season 4 prob wouldn't have gotten very far.  Now if they had used the 'newer' rating system back then they would have seen that ST:TOS was better than TPTB thought it was.  And that just might have afforded a better budget.  We'll never know now, but I think the speculation is pretty spot on.  Just MHO

Putting the stipulation of "not including" TAS makes no sense. The staff approached TAS as if it WERE the 4th season of TOS. Many of the scripts had been written for the 4th season of TOS. IT is, for all intents and purposes, the 4th season.

But not everyone watched TAS or got to watch TAS.  I only got to see 2 episodes out of them all.
