Mars' soil more suitable for life than thought

The soil on Mars may be more capable of supporting life than previously thought, a new study suggests.

Researchers have long suspected that the Martian surface is packed full of oxidizing compounds, which could make it difficult for complex molecules such as organic chemicals — the building blocks of life as we know it — to exist. But the new study, which analyzed data gathered by NASA's Mars Phoenix Lander, suggests that's not the case.

This is a great find. An absolutely great find by NASA. It also suggests that below the surface of Mars there could be an ecosystem just waiting to be discovered.

What wonderous days the endeavour for space exploration is in. Just like when Mercury thundered into space soon the same thunder will heard as we head towards Mars.

Why would NASA lie about such a find?

It will be really interesting when the first Mars lander lands on Mars to see if plants can be grown in the soil.

Plants take in carbon dioxide and that then creates oxygen through photosynthesis. It will be one of the most monumentous days in space exploration when the first seedling breaks through the surface of the Martian soil.

When such an exploration mission is undertaken and proves that we can grow plants on Mars other planets with the same soil composition could also be explored as possibly growing plants in that would allow humans to colonize more planets in space.

There are many planets in the Universe that could be similar to Mars. Let me guess you don't believe in anything other than what you see before you?

That's what exploration is for: To find these things out!

There's a chance we may find something plant-like out there one day. But I'm a lot less sure about finding plants and animals: These would probably be the result of very terrestrial biological adaptations.

Yup. Always.

In all seriousness though for the moment, it might be the result of growing up in Aussie -- but I find semi-barren, exotic places like the Moon and Mars to have a far greater beauty than a lush and cultivated garden. Not to be under-estimated for exploratory value.

dang, this really stinks now that weve stopped the space shuttle program. btw, warp is now possibly possible. if we had the craft to get there, we could go at warp. i heard that the water on the moon is frozen, but enough to fill lake michigan! that would be enough to survive for a while with a small colony , especially if there was a water filtration system.

The universe can giggle all it wants, but it's not gettin' any of our bourbon!
