In relation to what the most Underrated Series is, what is the most Overrated series?

I definitely have to say that the Original Series is very overrated. Not bad by any means, but IMO, easily the weakest series. It's just too dated and too all over the place. All the other series had so much more structure and more stories going on. TOS was just too random. But all in all, still very enjoyable.

Couldn't think of what to vote for because I don't think any of the series are over-rated. Would maybe have said Animated, but part of the definition of "Over-rated" is that there is a fair amount of hype. I don't see a lot of hype around TAS!

I can’t say any of the series are over rated. Maybe some of the movies have been over rated although that is more personal preference. For me Nexus was over rated although I enjoyed the movie it wasn’t as good as the hype lead me to believe. Then again some of the Hype may be in my own head wanting the next movie to be better then the last.

The poll should also have (non of the above) then I could participate.

I agree TNG is the most overrated series back on trek. Allthough Cpt Picard maybe considert a worthy replacement for James Kirk, to look at the entire franchise of TNG era series VOY may be popular DS9 for me is a very detailed & fully conceptual perfect television-series of Star Trek.

Though I love TNG, the answer would have to be TNG since it is extremely popular and got more coverage than the other modern shows which were similarly as good, if not better.

I mean no disrespect to the awesome TNG when I say it was the most over-rated.  We tend to gloss over the two painful years in the beginning and ignore the glaring flaws thanks to the nostalgia goggles.

Again, I love TNG, just think of all the series, it's the most over-rated.

Anybody that thinks "The Original Series" is overrated...simply is misinformed IMHO.  This is the series that spawned all the rest as a result.  Without it...we'd all be Star Wars Fanatics.

I'll take the first season of "The Original Series" over any season of the rest of them.

In my opinion, The Next Generation is overrated.  It's a fun show and some of the later seasons' episodes are truly great.  But the show's comparatively low budget shows in its mediocre special effects, its sloppy takes, its rough scripts and the abysmal acting of many of its extras and guest stars.  It's the only Star Trek that comes across unprofessional at times.

Interestingly, I understand the original series also had a low budget, but its creators found ways to work around budget limitations so that today the original series actually looks less dated to me than The Next Generation (in terms of its special effects, I even think the original series looks less dated than early Voyager).

All of the above makes it sound as though I hate The Next Generation, when in actuality, I enjoy it and watch it regularly, but whereas so many fans seem to love this show the best, I choose to forgive what I perceive to be its flaws because I love the larger Star Trek franchise.

Yeah I can definitely agree that TNG is pretty over-rated. But TOS gets just as much hype as TNG, and I feel that TOS is more over-rated for the exact same reasons as what many have said about TOS. It's too 60's, it's too dated. It's too random and all over the place. TOS has many characters that rarely if ever get an episode about them. The series has no specific or tangible plot line like all the other series do. It's just something random every week. TNG at least had some specific story lines going on each year that were focused on. And even minor characters got attention. In TOS the only characters who ever get any major screen time is Kirk, Spock and Mccoy. And yes those characters are great, but I would've liked to have seen a more equal series and have every character get their share of episodes.

I tend to prefer DS9, Voyager and Enterprise the most because those 3 series IMO are the ones that are truely about something. TOS and to a degree TNG are about the random planet of the week. DS9 is about Bajor and the Cardassian occupation and the Dominion and gets really deep. Voyager has a very set and clear goal, to get home. Enterprise is also great, their goal is to learn how to survive in space and learn how to deal with intersteller travel. And then later to deal with the Xindi and the Klingons and the Romulans.

TOS and TNG were really good in their day. We just think it's overrated because we have seen much better special effects in this day. Without TOS, there would be no Star Trek. I do agree, TNG was a bit strange in it's first season. But aren't all shows like that? The style in the 80's is much different than the style today. Of course you'd think people with weird hair and clothes is odd (but I do agree ServalanFan- that guy with no pants is abnormal, and Bev and Deanna in Unitard cracked me up), but to the people watching it while it was still on it's original run thought nothing of it because it was normal to them.

Same with TOS. In Operation: Annihilate! The strange aliens that stuck to everything were actually fake vomit. But to people watching it in the 60's, it looked believable. And hot pants were all the rage in that time.

DS9 was alright. It did keep everything fairly constant. But you do have to have new things happening once in a while to keep it interesting. Voyager was the best by far. It had new things every week but still had consistancy in mind when making their episodes.

I can't flame at ENT because I haven't watched it, because everyone keeps telling me not to. So I'll just leave it at that.

I agree, if we had a "none of the above" button, it would be easier for some of us to participate.

None of these are overrated. TOS spawned it all and deserves the hype that it gets. As for the other series, it is not quite fair to indicate that they were too dated, since most works of art are anachronistic. Could the production team have made more of an effort when it came to fashion? Definitely...But I tend to consider what the franchise has done for TV culture as a whole, how most of us never miss an episode, even years after they have been off the air, and conclude that none have been overrated. Each series has its own set of fans, who like it for specific reasons. if these series had been overrated, there wouldn't be all these conventions and we definitely would not be interacting in this forum.

I think that TOS is by far the most overrated.  That show hasn't aged well and I doubt that it was ever as good as people think.

I found that DS9 didn't have a lot of fresh ideas. The only things they ever dealt with were Klingons, the Cardassians, the Bajorns, or some problem with Quark and his bar.

Sure, TOS and TNG didn't have much consistancy with their episodes, but at least they dealt with more than 4 aliens. A new alien every episode draws in people better.

See although I like individual episodes of DS9 I find I couldn't care less about Bajor, the Cardassian occupation or the Dominion or the Ferengi.

I also find I'm not all that interested in the internal politics of the Klingon or Romulan empires that comprised a lot of the story arcs in TNG.

More episodes about them are just boring. Lets get into space and do something with can I say it more 'worthy' different and interesting characters.

However IMO the Xindi part of ENT was interesting. I didn't mind that story arc because it eventually ended and the Enterprise got on with doing what she was supposed to do - exploring, discovering and making first contacts.

But I really can't say DS9 or ENT are overrated because most people don't think of them when you refer to 'Star Trek'

I can agree with you that DS9 did re-use alot of various species. But what DS9 did was take species we knew from previous series and it took those species much deeper than we'd ever seen. I've always seen DS9 to be an extension of TNG. Particularly after TNG ended. Because it's in the same time and in the same quadrent and dealing with for the most part the same species. And some of the same characters. But I am partial to both DS9 and Enterprise. DS9 is my favorite series and Enterprise is my 2nd favorite.
