Shadow Fleet is operating as strong as ever. Our amazing members are continuing the tradition of posting excellence with their exciting and engaging role playing.
The newly commissioned USS Gettysburg now on its second mission, is going strong with a very active crew. Their latest mission sees them delve into the mysteries of a nebula with unexpected results. Will the new Galaxy class survive its baptism of fire?
The USS Gibson, our small but mighty Nova class vessel is performing admirably. Its crew are some of the most friendly and welcoming members on the forum. They make everyone feel right at home.
The USS Discoverys current mission sees the senior command staff called away, the remaining crew must confront a task which may make or break them. Featuring a frightening encounter with one of the crews venomous pets, will the crew be able to overcome their challenges?
The USS Churchill, our illustrious Intrepid class vessel continues its excellent standard of posting. The ship’s commanding officer, Reece Thompson, has recently gained promotion to Captain through years of dedication and commitment. The crew are currently fighting to keep two old enemies of the Federation apart while simultaneously negotiating a peace with a mysterious new race called the Solen.
There are vacant positions aboard all our vessels. So, if you want a Star Trek role play with near constant activity and friendly creative members come give us a try, sign up now at www.shadowfleet.org

We here at Shadow Fleet recognise achievement. If a player is prepared to put in the work they will be rewarded, an example of this is the recent promotion of John Kawolsky.
John Kawolsky is a founding member of Shadow Fleet. He has been promoted to Rear Admiral upper Half in line with his new role as Task Force Commander. Task group Alpha is now full with 4 ships and we look to the future and our second task group with this promotion.
Here is a excerpt from Fleet Admiral Chris O'Neill about the promotion:
"Joining the fleet from it's inception in 2007, John Kawolsky's first assignment was as Security/Tactical Officer on the Nova-class USS Discovery. Quickly rising through the ranks, it wasn't long before he attained the position of First Officer on the ship. Soon after and with the departure of the ship's Captain Kayla Harper, Kawolsky stepped up to lead the crew through new missions and role-playing action. In 2011, he received promotion to the rank of Rear Admiral (Lower Half), leaving the Discovery to focus his attention on building up the fleet's only Task Group which now consists of four starships. Ever since, he has shown tremendous dedication and organisation, and without that Shadow Fleet would have crumbled long ago."
Well done, Rear Admiral.

After my invitation I spent a solid hour at the web site exploring. I e-mailed some questions to recruiting 2 days ago but haven't heard back yet. Perhaps I should ask them here?
1. If I begin as an enlisted crewman and then decide to go to the Academy, is there a clear path to commissioned officer from the enlisted ranks?
2. What if I can't decide what I want to be when I grow up? It looks like one has to choose a trade right from the beginning. I know I'd make a poor computer tech, but I don't know if I could serve as well in one field or another. I've read the descriptions, but is there a competency exam for recruits to take (if not, there should be) like the Armed Services Aptitude Battery that recruits to the US military take? Something to demonstrate strengths and weaknesses, areas of interest, etc. would be fun!
3. If I want to kill off my character and start another one can I do that? Or if my species is short-lived, like an Okampa, for example. Being a Baku, I'm curious about mortality as you might imagine.
Browsing around the site I was very impressed! I don't know how much time I would have to devote to it, but I can see why it's addicting for so many players.
Thanks in advance for your reply, here or in the e-mail I sent!
Y'gotta learn to play!

Hi,
We apologise for the delay in replying to your email. We were experiencing technical difficulties with our outgoing mail, this has now been rectified. I have answered your points below.
1. If I begin as an enlisted crewman and then decide to go to the Academy, is there a clear path to commissioned officer from the enlisted ranks?
Answer: All new members start as an enlisted crewman at the rank of crewman recruit. After a period of time and a predetermined amount of posts, you will reach the rank of Petty Officer Third class. At which point, you may apply to the CORP (Commissioned officer recruitment period). These occur once every quarter or sooner depending on demand. Should you pass the CORP exam, you will be promoted to the commissioned rank of Ensign. You will then follow the commissioned rank structure. If you decide to stay on the enlisted route, you can take the EPC exam and go down that route.
A full description of our rank structure can be found here: http://www.shadowfleet.org/forum/index.php?topic=183.0
Answer: You would be required to pick a trade on your application however, this is not set in stone. You can decide to change trades if there is a position available on your ship. We do not at present have any aptitude exams as people could just google the answers.
3. If I want to kill off my character and start another one can I do that? Or if my species is short-lived, like an Okampa, for example. Being a Baku, I'm curious about mortality as you might imagine.
Answer: If you want to kill off your character you can but, the death must have meaning and be in line with the story - not simply a gratuitous death. If you then wanted to create a new character after it, you would have start from scratch with the new character, nothing will carry across. We do this in the interest of fairness and realism.
I hope this satisfies all your questions, should you have anymore the email is now working or you can post here again. I hope to see you on our forum soon!
Thanks
Jon Tulley

Thanks, PO3 Tully! It sounds really fun. For awhile I'll have only very limited time to invest, mostly on weekends only, probably. When I have the time to give the game the attention it sounds like it really deserves, I'll sign up!

I recently joined Shadow Fleet and was attached to for the very structured environment and having full departments, rather than just RP with department heads but no regular crew. I found the staff and other players very open, welcoming and easy to get a long with.
If you enjoy writing and want to try something in the Star Trek universe, Shadow Fleet is worth a look.

Role playing, it's fun. It uses one of the most powerful tools we have - imagination. Come unleash yours at Shadow Fleet.
Here is an example of roleplay from the Intrepid class light cruiser, USS Churchill NCC-75214.
Reece entered the transporter room. He looked around at the chief at the control. "Everyone ready?"
The chief nodded, "Green lights from all ships. Klingons and Cardassians aren't too happy though."
"I've got security on alert. Beam them all over. And disable any weapons." Reece ordered before turning to face the transporter pad. The blue hue of the containment field dissipated into the figures of the ship commanders. The transporter pad looked like the hosts of the most important conference ever was about to happen, and it almost felt like that to Reece.
The Solen were causing problems and they hadn't been known for that long.
The Klingon turned to the Cardassian straight away. "What is that Pah'tak doing here?" he barked.
Reece immediately stepped forward. "I am Commander Reece Thompson. I asked for everyone here Commander. I trust that's not going to be a problem?" He allowed a few moments of silence before continuing. "I have a number of security personnel outside ready to take you all the briefing room. Once there, we'll talk about this situation in more detail."

It's post of the month award time once again. The nominations were made the judges voted and the winner for March 2013 is.... Petty Officer third class - Jon Tulley.
Here's the winning post:
[Gamma 448 - Northern continent]
The alien sun of Gamma 448 was at its zenith in the sky, bearing down on the harsh iron-rich, sandstone terrain of the planets surface. The temperature was exceeding what any human would consider ‘unbearable’. This particular patch of red-hell was located on the southern tip of one of Gamma 448’s northern continents. Positioned almost directly on the equator, it received the full dose of daily solar radiation.
Jon Tulley halted and futilely tried to stem the flow of sweat pouring into his eyes, it was blurring his vision and causing considerable discomfort. He was wearing Starfleet issue UV protectors along with desert-certified clothing, but those didn’t stop the profuse sweating. He had been following a lead for the past couple of days, trying to find a remote shrine or religious site which may hold some significance with Starfleet. The local dust farmers had told Tulley he was heading in the right direction, but they couldn’t give him a precise location. Jon had tried to pinpoint his destination using the Churchills planetary scanning suite to no avail. Tulley had to go back to basics and search using more traditional methods.
Liking himself to the early european explorers of the 15th century, Jon was trying to find a little piece of Solen and Human history. In a previous mission, Jon had recovered the log of an old NX-class ship which crash landed onto this planet. In that log, it was found that the Solen gained warp-theory from the stranded crew by less than peaceful means. Of course, the Solen had changed from their violent ancestors but, as Jon knew well, they still had the tendency to simply take what they needed.
Looking into the distance, Jon thought he caught a glimmer of light in the heat haze. Maybe it was just a mirage or his imagination but, he decided to investigate anyway. Wiping his eyes once more he replaced his eye protectors, took a swig from his camel-pack and proceeded up the slight incline of the hill in front of him.
He was not disappointed. Cresting the low hill, he came across a small graveyard and monument. The monument was fashioned from what looked to be a duranium girder, and stood approximately twelve feet tall. Surrounding the metal in a loose circle, were around a dozen headstones crafted from the local stone. Walking closer he could make out an inscription burned into the metal. It read: Here lies the crew of the NX-Osaka. Stranded away from home, they served with honour to the last.
The names of the crewmen were also carved onto the headstones, Jon wondered which one belonged to the captain in the video log. His search was over. As Mike had stated, the descendants of these crewmembers could now be contacted and informed of the final fate of their missing family members.
Taking a seat in the shade of the duranium monument, Tulley removed his sun protection and took a long drink. He would document this site and record everything for the history books.

We are excited to announce that a decision has been made to appoint a new Flag Officer Commanding for Task Group Alpha. In what is the first promotion of its kind for over two years, the Shadow Fleet Admiralty is proud to appoint Captain Reece Thompson to this prestigious position.
Captain Thompson joined Shadow Fleet in April 2009 as Ensign in the Security/Tactical department. Since that time, he has worked his way up the ranks eventually achieving a position as Department Head with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After a short break away from the fleet, Thompson returned with a new-found enthusiasm which quickly won him a position as First Officer on the USS Discovery. Several months later, Thompson was promoted to Captain and transferred to the USS Churchill.
With his experience as both a poster and a Command Level Officer, we are confident Captain Thompson will take to his new role well. The promotion itself will take effect at the conclusion of the Churchill's current mission. Until that time, please congratulate Captain Thompson on his new administrative position in the fleet.
