Captain of the new Enterprise...

There has been a lot of discussion about whether or not people like the new Enterprise. Personally, I think it's okay; nothing great, but I can live with it. What I'm more concerned with is who is going to crew it? Maybe the folks over at CBS and Cryptic already have everything planned out and know who everyone is going to be, but in case everything hasn't been finalized yet, I'd like to submit a name for consideration as the captain. Be warned, this next bit is a spoiler. Throughout the Destiny and Typhon Pact series of novels, Picard and Crusher finally got together, married, and had a son: Rene Jacques Robert Francois Picard. What made Jean-Luc Picard great was his capabilities as a diplomat, which made him an excellent explorer and first contact specialist, and his skills as a battle tactician for when diplomacy just wasn't possible or enough. The only thing I felt he lacked was advanced scientific knowledge. So if we take Picard's diplomacy and tactical abilities and add the genes of the mother of the only human with enough scientific genius to evolve into a traveler, well, that would almost be some kind of super human wouldn't you agree? By my estimates, Rene would be around 29 or 30 years old by 2409(the year Star Trek Online begins, if you weren't sure) and some might think that's a bit on the young side to be given the captaincy of the new flagship of the Federation, but I don't think it would be that much of a stretch for someone with that kind of genetic pedigree. A pedigree that, if used properly, could be an excellent vehicle for some incredible storytelling and inventive crisis solving. Plus, I think there's a certain symmetry in keeping the Enterprise-Picard team alive.

As for the rest of the crew, they can be anyone you want; either canon related or not, so long as they are fully realized, deep characters with histories and personalities with flaws they need to learn to overcome. What has kept people tuning in each week wasn't a bunch of space battles and technobabble, although that is certainly a part of it and may even be what initially attracted some people in the first place. What has kept the franchise from going too stale was the stories about real world events, issues and everyday life happening right now told by characters we could invest some emotional currency in and watch grow as people, all while hopefully taking a little something from it and growing a bit ourselves.  So as long as those in charge of breathing life into this inanimate object which has sparked so much debate keep this philosophy in mind and strive to deliver it, they'll have a generally happy audience/player base.

So let me know what you think of my nomination for captain and pass it along and maybe make a few suggestions of your own.  Live long and prosper!

I like your idea for the captain of the U.S.S Enterprise NCC-1701-F! I've read those books, and I think doing this would make a great tribute to the TrekLit Universe.

A newly dicovered ingenious descendant of the J.T Kirk gene pool.

With all the illegitimate little Kirk's scattered around the galaxy, you might want to be a little more specific.

Considering the population of the UFP, I think it would make more sense to simply have a new captain that isn't directly linked to any previous characters.

I think a decendent of Captain Picard or my favorite idea the revival of Data and his taking command of the new Enterprise as the first android captain.

Rene Picard could be a nice idea, but as you say I feel he is too young - he could perhaps be a crew member, a bridge officer of some description perhaps?

Rene could possibly be 2nd or 1st officer under Data.

Well he's roughly the same age as Kirk or Ezri Dax when they took their Captaincies. And we can't forget the genius pedigree he comes from.

Definately, I would choose Data for his outstanding performance on the USS Sutherland.

I like the idea of new blood... this Star Trek era deserves it's own legend. I kind of grow tired of the lack of imagination when the dynasty conversations come up. Let's have a new hero, with a new name for the 25th. century.

I don't think they mean that one.  Check the first post.

Jumped the gun on that one. my mistake.

Still...I'd prefer a new capatain, as has always been the case. Archer wasn't related to Kirk, Kirk wasn't related to Picard, and so on.

Agreed. I think we need a non-human. A Bolian would be preferably in my opinion, or maybe even a Cardassian! They are at peace, after all.

The UFP & Cardassians may be at peace, but that doesn't mean that the Cardassians are a part of the UFP.  The UFP is supposedly made up of hundreds of worlds.  Why not examine that a little by featuring one of these as captain.  A Bolian woud be fine, or an Andorian.
