>But an entirely different matter: there is a tendency among some people to cry foul and claim persecution when all that is "happening" to them is a deconstruction of their beliefs. This I suspect is as the root of the majority of such protestations on this particular board.

>I've got no problem with discussing my beliefs, as long as it's done in a respectul and considerate way.  That's what I accord everyone else, so that's what I expect in return.  It's how I was raised, and I consider it a virtue, one that I intend to teach my children, who have a mixed-faith heritage.

I appreciate that.

I'm afraid I shall have to truncate my reply as the board was extra glitchy the other day and seems to have swallowed it, chewed it up, and passed it into the nether regions of its cybernetic bowels, never to be seen again!

I think the distinction that must be made is between "persecution" in the sense of threatening, "challenging" in the sense of ridicule (Both of which -- although I might make an occasional silly joke -- I was raised on the idea that while there are important things in the world, few of these are immune from occasional silly jokes) I do not personally agree with. and "deconstruction" in the sense of analysis and debate, perhaps what the Russian Formalists would call "Defamiliarisation"~~ Looking at familiar beliefs from a more "unfamiliar" perspective.

And in particular, the importance of not viewing every one of the above ~~defensively~~ as "Persecution".
