I haven't read the book, but the controversy over Ms. Jacobsen's claims seems interesting.

Apparently, most of her book deals with the secret technology and weapons that have been tested in Area 51. Then, her last chapter goes off the rails for some:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/books/annie-jacobsens-area-51-the-us-top-secret-military-base/2011/05/26/AGIZPLIH_story.html

Annie Jacobsen, a Los Angeles-based independent journalist, does an adequate if error-ridden job of reporting on these black-budget projects and several others besides, using the classic investigative method of interviewing dozens and dozens of worker bees from engineers to security guards and piecing their stories together. Then, like a test pilot who pushes her plane too far, she crashes and burns on the grisly tales of an unnamed single source, supposedly an Area 51 engineer and Manhattan Project veteran who leads her on a wild goose chase of honking absurdity straight down the UFO vapor trail into the very heart of conspiratorial darkness. There Jacobsen is told that Auschwitz butcher Dr. Josef Mengele, the German aircraft-designing brothers Walter and Reimar Horten and Soviet dictator Josef Stalin conspired back in the late 1940s to scare America silly with a Nazi-Soviet flying saucer crowded with wobbly 13-year-olds with large, surgically altered heads. Except that the thing crashed. In a barren corner of New Mexico. Really.

Has anyone on the board read this book? What do you think? What do you think about Area 51 in general?

To my understanding Area 51 is simply where secret ideas and state of the art technology is tested. The conspiracy theorys led to a whole town becoming a tourist trap for fin inspired alien spotting, a few cranks and a few folks who just wanted to see if they could spot the latest technological masterpiece in the air.

Its possible actual aliens were found and the whole thing was built around that, more likely this story was encouraged to throw people off what they were really up to, either way we'll find out what they did in the past as documents come up for release, but we'll never know what they are currently up to.

"Let me see if Ive got this straight. You're risking the ship, the crew, and the mission on the assumptions that Helkara and Leishman are engineering geniuses, Tharp is a piloting savant, our transporter chief can work miracles, and the Breen are unwilling to sacrifice themselves in a kamikaze attack?" "Yup." "Damn I LOVE this job."

Really? No UFOs? You've been able to identify every single object you've seen in the air?

UFO =/= ETs.

Also, the rest of your statement shows such depths of disillusion that it's not even worth formulating a resonse to.

Value judgement on your part bunky?

I'm sorry, is that supposed to mean something?

Area 51, I'm kinda neutral on that whole alien crash thing. It's probably just a super secret base for super secret technology and weapons. The "crash" was probably nothing more than something gone wrong with some very human, US made tech.

I believe there is other life in the universe. Doubt they would waste their time anal probing local yokels for information.

If they've come this far, they want something. Good, bad, whatever. I'm not saying we haven't been visited, just saying I don't believe they would play tricks on the populace with weird lights and crop circles.

Alien 1: How should we communicate with the hu-mans?

Alien 2: Crop circles. They love crop circles.

I like the Men in Black legends the best. Not so many stories on them and certanly nothing recent. Maybe it didnt seep into the general concious like other theorys, or maybe these aliens realised they were doing a bad job at imitating humans and gave up, for now. I like the latter idea better.

As for aliens communicating via the pretty vandalism of a farmers field, Id say its worth a bit of a scoff.

They travel a trillion skillion miles just to do this:

Which would mean our alien visitors are like crafting memaws. That doesn't sound too bad, actually. Maybe they'd give us all quirky sweaters or cozies decorated with their alien equivalent of cats.
