In Trek, Starfleet headquarters is in San Fransisco and the UFP is centered in Paris.  Both on Earth.  Do you agree with these choices?  Would you have centered these institutions elsewhere on Earth or in Federation space?

I understand why. Aliens aside, ST is really mankind's love letter to itself. From space. About how things could be.

From a defense standpoint, it's stupid beyond belief. It made the planet a constant target for enemies of the UFP. They should have picked a Class M with no sentient beings or a colony of a member planet with a low population.

I've thought that, too.  That a non-homeword would seem appropriate politically and defensively.

Humans were the warp toddlers of the four founding members of the UFP. It's seems silly that humans would be so dominant with the least amount of knowledge and that both the defense/exploration and political HQs would be on earth. Defense fail. If the planet is attacked or detroyed, TWO major institutions are severely impacted. Not to mention the loss of civilian life. Furthermore, placement on a non-homeworld would truly demonstrate the supposed egalitarian spirit of the UFP.

Humans may have been the warp toddlers but, according to the books, their technology was very different and the technology the fleet would stay with.  Starfleet was also established prior to the UFP so I understand it being on earth for that reason.

As for the UFP headquarters being on earth, IF you put it on Earth, New York makes more sense to me.  If I had to pick a singe city to be the world capital, it would be NYC.  Paris only sems relevant on the world scene as the center of the arts.

Of course, clever humans. *eye roll* Not at you, just the idea that humans who were late to the party ended up leading the pack. Eventually, perhaps. Out the gate, no.

I understand that SF was originally an earth-based organization that got rolled up into the UFP. But once that took place, the HQ's should have been somewhere else. Maybe an earth colony or possession.

I'm sorry, the UFP HQ's on earth is just bad. All the way around. One need only think of 9/11 to understand why. Clearly, GR and others couldn't have foreseen that tragedy.

But strategically and politically it makes no sense. ESPECIALLY when factoring in the unknown of hostile alien weapons and motivations. It's almost like the Vulcans, Tellarites, and Andorians were snickering behind our backs, "um, yeah, earth, good choice!" Also, the UFP President rotated. Good. But you mean to tell me that President Alien X would be just peachy keen on coming to earth to serve with SF (also on earth and mainly human staffed) just over his/her/its shoulder. Sounds intimidating.

Half the cadets and a third of the officers would be dead from jamaharonicide.

New York.  It's the center of the universe already.

Anyway, the reasons why you put it in a major population center should be clear;

1. You need to defend that population center anyway, so you use less resources on defence.

2. You have the services and infrastructure in place to service visiting dignitaries.

3. You have a stable local government that will not be a threat to your alliance headquarters.

The reasons why it should be Earth should be obvious - The Andorians would object to it being on Vulcan and The Vulcans would object to it being on Andor.  Earth is middle ground in the conflict.  Earth is also the nearest world to The Romulans and the perfect place for shipyards that can service the frontlines in a potential war.

What about Tellar?

Good reasons for NY and Earth.  But you don't think just putting it in a nothing planet of a member's solar system would work?  Like put the academy on the moon?  If you are going to work in space, you might as well train in space.

I might put SF headquarters (since it is - as mentioned - a Terran institution) in a small country town. No need to add yet another employment booster to the city - get some good jobs and development out to the country!

And preferably outside the US - you guys got more than enough options to rule the world! How about putting it in the Central African Republic instead?

I agree that the Academy should be in space, since that´s what they´re training for. And space is big...

And UFP headquarters... well, anywhere within reach of the four planets involved, and for political reasons, it might be wise to pick a planet not owned by any of the four.

If there is nothing wrong with me, then maybe there´s something wrong with the universe? -Dr. Crusher
