Sorry, this might be the wrong way to find answers to FAQ's...but I didn't know where or how else to dig up info! I have noticed the "pips" or rank ensignia under the username of those who have made posts on the message boards. I've seen several Ensigns, a Lt. JG , & one Captain. How does a person move up in rank on this site?

Got a fresh question.

I've noticed ALOT of individuals from within the franchise such as authors and artists frequent trekbbs.com whereas I've only seen 2 authors participate on this board.

Why are such people using that site rather than this one, the "official" board?

In many ways, that board seems much more active and have more involved base base participation.  I can't figure out why such ones don't come here.

So I asked members of trekbbs why they prefer that site and why they have more "insider" posters.  i got some interesting replies.

It is amazing how many fans don't use this site AT ALL and/or don't like this site and its boards.  Perhaps that is something members and admins alike should consider and try to make this site a better place.

Obviously the CBS staff only cares about this site to the end that it be profitable.  Well, a business won't be profitable if no one wants/enjoys using it.  Maybe more consideration needs to go into the quality and experience of this site.

To be fair to StarTrek.com for a second:

Personally, I don't think that I could keep
up with the die-hard fans on boards like
that site's. Where most users know every
minute detail, no matter how insignificant,
from behind the scenes to every spoken line.
It's just not going to be that much fun ...

StarTrek.com fans have a much broader range.
Some know everything, others think they do,
and still others are only superficially aware.

That link doesn't lead directly to the thread,
by the way. I did try to fish around for it,
briefly, but their search method is cumbersome.

So you say different boards for different types of fans?  I for one enjoy my time on both sites but find it a shame that other boards look more professional and have a more star trek feel.

I suppose I understand your position 2takes, but I think this site should try to draw in more of the insider people like BBS does.  As some people there were saying, they didn't even know this site has boards or check here for franchise news and info.  Clearly even beyond the boards, this site isn't even on the radar of many fans and I think that's sad.  I think it could use to somehow do a better job calling attention to itself and increase its appeal instead of counting on people thinking, "Where should I go to learn/talk about star trek?  I'll just type in www.startrek.com."

all the boards have a different feel to them. And a different community.  I'll always see this as the mother ship though.  There is even a skin honouring st.com at arch-angels called the mother ship

I never liked the way you had to pay to get certain things at trek bbs

Valid points.  But shouldn't this board have a more wide-range appeal?  Beyond the board, the site itself.  I was shocked how many people there who say they NEVER use this site.  I checked in their news blurb; it is far superior and more frequently updated than here.  And the star trek fb page, it just seems like a forum for announcing actors' birthdays.

startrek.com should be setting the bar for the internet trek experience.

I guess it depends on whom the site is directing itself.
Which fanbase? If it is the CASUAL FAN, then this site is
all well-and-good. Indeed, it is. With one, major exception:

To anyone, regardless of level-of-fandom, being told, "we ...
Star Trek's OFFICIAL site ... are NOT ALLOWED to show certain
episodes because we don't have the broadcasting rights" is really lame.
Absurd, in fact. Those contracts should be annexed or appended, with
regard to OFFICIAL use of its own NAME BAND product(s).

I agree in a perfect world it would be.  But, unfortunately, we live in the real world.  This site is run by cbs and not paramount.  cbs has no star trek on the air and non in the making. I think for a tv show that is effectively dead they put a whole lot of effort into this site.

That's Lawyers for you. Bloodsuckers all.

I don't blame this site for that. They've
been put in a really tight spot. But Wissa's
right, outside of a movie every few years,
there's no product coming out. Again, this
puts this site in a position ...

Almost all OFFICIAL sites have something new
to sell. STAR TREK's newest flick is news from
a couple years ago. And after the sequel is out
awhile, it will be right back in that position, again.

A fan site can get away with all kinds of insanity,
based on its relatively obscure nature. At least until
a legal party catches wind of some infringement ...

But Matthias Russell's insistance that this site could
do even better, with the resources at hand, is one that
I happen to agree with. And those in charge should know
that regular users are more than interested in its success.
