Back in 1987 when TNG was first airing, in it's 1st season, was anyone's favorite character Yar?

She was one of those characters that I never thought about much. She was there and then was gone. However, when they brought her back in "Yesterday's Enterprise", which is one of my all time favorites, it was nice to see her in that way. She had more to her if that makes sense. Also liked her as her half Romulan daughter, she was great! To me she made much more of an impact. I remember watching it when the episodes debuted and thinking how great it was!

I agree, Yar's character was under developed during her brief time on TNG.  If I remember my TNG trivia, Michael Dorn (Worf) was the last cast member to join the crew, and I believe Worf's character had far more potential than Yar and it just made more sense to have a Klingon "brute" be Chief of Security, than a beautiful young blonde.

I suppose you could say the same thing about all 9 original cast members (Picard, Riker, Data, Crusher, Troi, Worf, Gordi, Yar, & Wesley) in season 1 being under-developed, first years tend to be that way in most TV shows.

Yar wasn't my fav character, but I remember being one of the few who actually liked her. She ceratinly was a hell of a lot better than Troi. She did have an interesting backstory, and there appeared to be a special relationship between her and Picard that would have been neat to see fully developed.

She actually really bothered me. I can see how she can be compared to Worf...but Worf Is Klingon, so it made sense that he was aggressive and rash. Yar just goes over the top. I'm not saying that I hate her character...I'm just saying she was annoying...glad she never made more than an occasiaonal appearance in further seasons..

I guess though you can understand why Yar is a pretty aggressive character, when taking into account her upbringing among that almost Mad Max kind of dystopian colony. With the "rape gangs" and all. Done better, she and her background could have made very interesting additions to the Star Trek universe. The trouble is though that she would sometimes flare up and get aggressive quite suddenly and with no believable lead-up to her occasional temper-flares.

I agree her story would've been interesting and they never really played on that. But you get my point that she was just very sudden in her aggression.

Anyways, does anyone know why she was killed off? Seems a bit strange to get rid of a main character in the first season :/

I loved the character Yar. But I have to admit I had to get used to her first. But Denise played it very well and I fell in love with her mimics. When she cried you just had to cry with her and when she smiled you had to smile too. I admire her strength and so did others and also the fact that she was chief of security.

Data loved her (if you may called it that) and it would have been interesting to watch that relationship develop.
