Im going to have to vote for Ezri, heres why. I felt like the writers didnt really know what to do with Dax and she was just all over the place, and I also think the actress who played her wasnt that great of an actor. Ezri was a counselor which I thought was cool and I just thought her back story was more interesting. That being said I felt DS9 had definitly commited to the character of Jadzia and when she died I felt as though they should have just let that be the end of the Dax character and brought on a completely different character all together, another Ferengi, Bajoran, Bolian anyone.

Nicole DeBoer, just from seeing her different work, is a much better actress. Terry Farrell was practically the same character in Becker. I kind of wish she opted out a season earlier. Though I would have liked to see more interaction between her and Sisko.
Early each morning he searched for her
Til his feet become bloody and tired
Her hologram photo stayed near to him
Buried deep in the pits of his heart

Honestly, it’s the writers and casting directors that broke a good opportunity.
And too futher note, I never balme an actor for a bad film or show, but I also don't think a film or show is redemed just because of one good performance.
The Dax character while was interesting, the writers just did not seem to know how to make it work, and the actress for Jadzia just was not up for the task. While the chemistry between Sisco and Jad was leaps and bounds better then Worf and Jad, and while the character sounded good on a summery, in a result was not an interesting character. The character just comes off unconvincing, and obnoxious.
So when Jadzia died by Fire-Marshal Dukat (God, season seven was stupid), I sighed, shrugged, and moved on.
But then they decided to bring Dax back, with a new host.
Everything about Ezri is polar opposite of Jadzia. Everything about Ezris character worked. Finaly the writers now have a foothold and finally the casting directors found an actress that actually brings a potent performance on the table, and not just her looks, and finally The Dax Symbiot shows a real presence on screen.
You could say Jadzia was "The Motion Picture" to Ezris "Undiscovered Country".
Ezri Dax was wonderful, and is my favorite Star Trek female, and Nicole DeBoer is one of my favorite actresses.
So what was wrong with this character...too little, too late.
To be honest, killing off Jadzia at the near end of the series would have been fine. But brining Dax back with a new host is just wrong.
Why even bring a new character at the end of your run?
Everyone love 7 of 9. But just imagine, if 7's character was introduced in the last season?
The word I'm thinking of is "wasted".
And its almost depresses me, just because the new direction and performance was just that good.
If Nicole was involved in the DS9 project right from the beginning, she would not just simply be well known, I will go on a limb and say that her character would have been to par with Spock. Not just an everlasting performance, but an everlasting and universal character in of itself.

I agree wholeheartedly!
I also agree, to varying extents, with the rest of the post, but those are the good bits.

I have to say that when I found out a major character was going to die at the end of sixth season, I was like *eep* OH NO!!
When I found out that it was Jadzia, I was relieved. I'm sorry guys she was better when with Worf, but she never truly rose above Ok and mid-level bland. Most that I can really say about her through the first few seasons at least is, "Hm. She was there."
Most I could have said about her carking it (ie. Dying) was "Oh ok. Now she's not there."
Have you ever danced with a Tribble in the pale moonlight?

The loss of Jadzia turned season seven into a tailspin. Terry Farell did a great job of showing off a character with multiple personalities and also a lending an accurate stoicism of an experienced character. She was able to get the best out of the other characters in whatever role her character was in.
This is why Jadzia will always be one of the most loved characters on DS9 and in all of the Star Trek lore.

Ezri would NOT have been on "par with Spock." I don't know where THAT opinion finds its basis, because there's no merit in it. She WOULD have a fan base at LEAST as strong as Jadzia's, had Ezri been the one there, all along, instead. But none of DS9's crew is a household name like SPOCK is. None!
Ask some idiot on the street if they know who Spock is. They do. Ask them if they know Jadzia, 0do, or Quark and you get blank stares. To say nothing of mentioning Ezri ...

On April 29, 2011, fans were invited to participate in a poll to determine which was the more attractive:
Ezri Dax, or the achingly gorgeous Rain Robinson?
I was so smug. Rain would destroy Ezri ... surely! Wrong. Ezri Dax's victory was near-total. I've always suspected that there was some trickery afoot to account for this discrepency in logic and taste in beautiful wymin. But direct evidence of such never eventuated ...

Either that poll was done on April 1st or the "people" that voted are idiots.
