Geordi was, in my opinion, Starfleet's best engineer! But, I think he would have made a great captain, and I would be honored to serve under him. (Also, as an engineer, I expect I would learn a lot from him, in such a dream assignment!)

What about O'Brien? He MacGyvered that rundown Cardy deathtrap into a viable station, raised a starship's warp factor above its theoretical limit, and built a new system (differential magnetomer) while on a runabout.

I believe he was better suited in the engine room. It defined his character much more than the revolving comm officer's chair. Plus TNG may not have needed some of the old roles like a communications officer or a science officer, but chief engineer is a biggie.

LaForge is another great character, and I do like him in both roles, but I do prefer him as Chief Engineer.

I like him as Chief Engineer because he's really helpful with the machinery and tactical section of the Enterprise. Without him the whole Enterprise would be doomed!!
