My description of the excelsior: Jack of all trades, master of some.
We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistances is futile. (P.S. Jem,Hadar are our friends, so watch out.)

well, if you're going full eng cruiser tank, i would suggest the star cruiser. dreadnought/assault if you want more punch, but really not much difference. just a matter of a console slot here rather than there. the excelsior trades a console for the transwarp drive. that puts it at a disadvantage.

Thats really what my friend, who plays this game to, said. He is so badly in love with the excelsior he made me post it. The real reason I wanted this topic is so we could discuss if the excelsior class is truly good as my friend says. I really want to know this: is the dreadnought, excelsior, assualt, or star cruisers the best ship. Please post what you think is best, so when I get to admiral i'll have an idea what to choose.

I'm happy with my AGT and saucer sep Galaxy. The excelsior gives me nothing special enough to buy them, especially since MR has full diplomacy rank with the transwarp priveleges.

that's exactly right. when you start the diplomacy thing, you get transwarp points as you prgress. that pretty much makes the excelsior's TW useless. so there's no point flying it because of the console slot you have to give up. the retrofit galaxy is fine, but the starcruiser has more crew, which gives obvious advantage, and handles exactly the same (check the movement stats). but on my engineer vice admiral toon, i fly the dreadnought. i love the dual heavy cannons on it. but if that wasn't there or i want to go beams, i use the assault cruiser. but, i am more of a 'take lots of damage, then pop off a series of good quick attacks to finish off a target' kind of tank. but but for straight 'take all the damage and never die' tank. go with star cruiser. keep in mind, all this is for pvp. you can take any ship and get through the pve fairly easily.

The canon ability of the dreadnaught is cool, I keep one for that reason, but I enjoy broadsiding and can cause great damage with 4 arrays unloading. Course, then I have to s l o w l y turn for a torp shot. The cloak would be good if it were a tact cloak.

on my dread, i run 3 dual heavy phaser cannons and quantum on front, and 4 turrets on rear. just something about a big ship popping out of cloak shooting 3 dhc's torp, and 4 turrets at once that scares most people. plus they can't just turn and kill you quickly like an escort or something. i love dread, but get tired of the sluggishness of cruisers. i normally play tac in defiant retrofit.
