okay I look a great deal at star trek however I do believe that when kirk should have used his mind to be counteracting the antaginists of the galxsy he dissided to use his unique technology to gain power over others and he believed his good looks could get him anywhere and honestly if he used that trick on me he would fall flat on his face! Picard was a diplomate and had a very stratigic mind although he did surender before the first commercial he got it back before the last and i find that quite an impressive plan. Janeway only gave up her ship when either UNCONTIOUS or had a phaser rifel pointed at her beloved crew and still although not there in person managed to get her ship back thanks to another stratigic thought.

>WHY do so many people stereotype Kirk as a person who "solves problems with his fists and not his mind?" ..........

I'm afraid there is a sizeable minority lobby who try to use Kirk as a whipping boy to rubbish TOS.

It is based upon some kind of misplaced jealousy that TOS was the first show and some of the later blando-yawnfests weren't

to boldy go where no man has gone before

Vger, realize that Kirk did some good things, but he just loved to go down to every planet rips off his tunic and change a planets evolution by fighting, Picard was a fighter too but with his mind, Picard had the bigger ship, one torpedoe hit and Kirk's 1701 is obliterated, Many times Picard COULD had gotten what he wanted by force if he wanted like in "Symbiosis" "Who Watches The Watchers" and "Journey's End" but he was a diplomat, Picard acted like a real captain would, AND SERVALAN FAN, I have nothing against Captains having sex, BUT, Picard treated his woman like ladies, like in "Lessons", Kirk just have sex with them, then on to the next 25 bimbos. No REAL Captain would risk his life like Kirk did, he'd be kicked out of the Navy.

Vash was ALL WOMAN, I doubt Kirk could handle her, as Kirk would try to charm Vash, before he knew it, she'd take his Phaser and stun him, heh, heh..Servalanfan, I'm sure you got charts of all the Enterprises, Look at the 1701 THEN compare that to the 1701-E, no matter what Kirk's ship would do Picard's Enterprise would SWALLOW IT UP in a second, Picards ship was FASTER and more powerful .

DJ, are you like a reverse closet TOS fan or something... trying to make TOS look good by coming across as a dumb TNGer? Because I'm sure any TNG fans would be embarrassed by you...

Picard's just more sensible I think. He doesn't barge into a situation. By the way, you forgot the hyphen between Jean and Luc.

Yes, I agree, my friend, Picard had greater responsibility as well, he had families on his ship, so he couldn't be some cocky nut just beaming down every time some alien bimbo cries for help.

DJ, the only sensless, cocky, behavior being done around here is by you. Your blind devotion to Picard makes any kind of debate with you useless. You get so worked up and irrational that your arguments are nothing that can be taken seriously. You get so frustrated with the fact that more people like Kirk than Picard, that it actually causes you to BASH Kirk rather than argue the merits of the characters.

But, this is standard, run-of-the-mill behavior for you. It's how you are with everything. Bash the living-shit out of anything that you are opposed to and preach like a madman for anything you like.

And you wonder why nobody takes you seriously? You're far too polarizing to be taken seriously.

And, I totally disagree with your take on Kirk's "recklessness" vs. Picard's "thoughtful restraint." Kirk was a man of action. He made decisions. He didn't hide behind the veil of "moral superiority" to keep from doing what was right like Picard did.

Two men with different styles. Why you have to continually harp on which is "superior" is really baffling to me. Obviously both men were successful and effective commanders. Why do you have to thrive so heavily on the conflict of pitting one against the other?

Vger...When TNG first came on TV it was different, when Picard said those words "let's see whats out there" we knew we had a unique show...Vger, being realistic, A Captain is a valuable officer and he must lead, to jump out of his seat all the time and beam down is foolish, that's why TNG had Commander Riker, that was corrected, they had different styles, yes,  but when you're dealing with lives and families on the ship you must use diplomacy first..Kirk did this, but Picard did it more, it dosen't make you weak..Kirk was reckless just a little to vibrant, it's good to be a man of action but what's the point in having a crew of 430 when only the Captain , First Officer, and chief Medical officer DOES EVERYTHING ?
