Loved this episode, one of my favs in Voyager. The EMH/MkII were great together.

Some magazine described them as 'The Frasier and Niles of space'... an accurate and humerous description...

As I said, the scenes Picardo and Dick had were funny and the MkI really put the MkII in his place.

Great episode

>I understand what he's saying, he felt they should stay completely cut off to reinforce the isolationism. However, yes, they don't get to have contract with home until, what, season 6. And even then, they only get to contact starfleet a few times. All they got from contact was a few letters and status reports which gave them a glimmer of hope to boost their spirits.

My point is still that getting in touch with Earth already in season 4 ruined the premise about a lost ship stranded in the Delta Quadrant. It doesn't matter if they could contact Earth evert day or just a few status reports now and then.

That's a matter of opinion, I don't think it ruined the show

can you please clarify what you meant earlier when you said they could contact earth as easily as making a phone call, and state which episode this happened in? I've watched them all and never was their communication easy, but i might have missed something

so can you please clarify for me wht you meant by as easy as a phone call

If they had regular contact, I think it would have ruined the show but they were more out of touch with command than kirk in tos. All this episode did was allow command to know the ship survived and most of the crew was alive. It didn't enable them to get home any sooner, be resupplied, or receive direction. They were still alone and on their own facing the prospect of probably never getting home.

Exactly. This episode didn't do anything to change the premise. Starfleet wasn't able to help them in anyway. The only thing that happened in this episode was that the crew got a  boost in morale because their families were told they were still alive.

Ah, Message In A Bottle. So much win. At first, EMH II was a bit, let's say, different. But after a while, his way of being like a new version of Wesley-owning-a-starship was quite impressive. The over-dramatic nature really does make this episode enjoyable and the Picardo Performance was both uplifting in his exploration towards humanity and insightful as you learnt how on old program had become experienced was teacher a new, superior program, new tricks.

Well, I'm actually referring to the topic of this thread, "Message In A Bottle".

They were supposed to be stranded on the other side of the galaxy, 70 000 light years from home with no possible way to get in touch with Earth Headquarters.

All of a sudden, due to some alien technology they just happened to run into, they were able to send messages to Earth Headquarters, 70 000 light years away just as easy as making a phone call from LA to San Diego.

As I see it, that ruined the premise for the show. It would have been much better if they hadn't got in touch with Earth Headquarters shortly before entering Federation space.
