I got back into the novels after abstaining for a long time by reading Destiny first which got me hooked back in.  I would recommend at least reading Before Dishonor before Destiny.  If you like the Titan crew after reading the trilogy, you can either take that time to continue with the series with Torrent Sea and Synthesis which leads you into Typhon Pact.

Are there any specific tv series or characters you are especially fond of and want continuance for?

I don't consider that book essential if he is just trying to get caught up but GTTS does tell you alot about the state of the enterprise crew going into destiny since in that book a huge part of the crew had a major loss of confidence in Picard. Great ending, too.

I generally read the books when I find them in the book store.  The only few book series I've tried to read in order are the Titan series, Vanguard series and New Frontier series.  And those series are the ones I'd suggest that anyone starting those series to read them in order.  Those one's lend themselves to be read in order.

Otherwise I read them how I find & buy them, usually not in any particular order.

I've got a friend that wants to borrow my Titan books, and I'll lend them out to them but I want to find them all and lend them in the order they came out.  To me that series makes more sense that way.  ^_^

You used to not need to follow order since every story stood alone but now that the stories connect, it makes it better if you do though Vanguard, Voyager, and Enterprise are the only ones where you really need the WHOLE story.

From what you've told me, I would start with Greater Than the Sum if you can find it.  If not, move onto Destiny and you'll do fine, especially with Memory Beta filling you in.  That book will get you caught up with Riker and the USS Titan have been up to also.  If you like reading about the Titan in that book, there are 3 Titan books after it and it is a nice place to jump into the series.

Greater than the sum is a continuation of the Enterprise E's mission to destory the Einstein if you liked Before Dishonor.
