SHOULDN'T MILE BE A LT. OR LT. COMMANDER? HE HAD LT. PIPS ON TNG. WHY NOT DS9.

SINCE HE IS CHIEF OF OPERATIONS SHOULD HE NOT HAVE THE RANK. WHAT WERE THE WRITERS THINKING???

Chief of Operations on ds9 is indeed the non-comissioned officer. I didn't realized until now that Chief O'Brien on the Enterrpise-D had Lt. pips.

Wow, that's a very good point. I really liked Chief O'Brien on DS9 (I could have done without Keiko, but that's a topic for another ongoing post right now). After all he did in the first season alone getting the station back into order and working condition, they should have given him his own command let alone a bump up to Lt again lol.

IIRC, they even called him "Lieutenant O'Brien" once or twice on TNG. Demoting a commissioned officer to an enlisted man was a dumb idea by someone on the DS9 writing team who obviously doesn't know anything about the military.

I don't think they had the idea in mind to demote him realy, but obviously he's to be correct a senior chief specialist.

O'Brien's rank was always a little confusing.  I wish the officers and crewmen were more distinguishable in TNG onward.  I liked the different uniforms used to distinguish between the two used in TOS movies.

The thread also shows we should be able to edit titles.

What I think it came down to for o'brien is he didn't want to be one. Some don't want a commission in their career.
