Is Season 2 considered the best season?

Personally, I find Season 1 and 3 more enjoyable. But I've heard alot of fans give high praise for Season 2. I think Season 2 is my least favorite overall. I think Season 3 is just awesome!

I know there's a couple of episodes that weren't quite so good, like Spock's Brain and Turnabout Intruder, but there were some very good ones in Season 3. But that being said Season 2 had some great episodes as well.

I think that the general concensus has always been:

Season 1 is the best (back in the 70s/early-mid 80s, it was considered the best tv season ever).

Season 2 is good, but not as good as the first (though some fans think its as good, and it was James Doohan's favourite)

Season 3 is crap.

fans will all have their own differing opinions, but that seemed to be the majority view. I personally think all 3 seasons are equalling entertaining, and i have a soft spot for season 3 which is nowhere near as bad as many think.

I tend to think of them as one whole show neither disliking or liking any one season over another.

Are you sure it isn't time for a colorful metaphor?

My favorite Star Trek episodes are "Errand of Mercy," "A Taste of Armageddon," "Devil in the Dark," "The Galileo Seven" and "Who Mourns for Adonais."  So, as you can see, all but one of those come from Season 1, so I'd have to say Season 1 is my favorite.  It also has many other episodes I consider almost as good as my favorites, such as "Balance of Terror," "The Enemy Within" and "Space Seed."  But there is plenty to like in the other seasons, too, in my opinion.

Season 1 has Sulu, season 2 has Chekov, season 3 has both. I like Sulu more than Chekov, so I'll go 1 over 2 myself, but there is no bad season in my opinion. 3 gave us Day of the Dove and my favorite Klingon ever in Kang.

I jump back from my favorite being 1st and 2nd Season. Season 3's writing was EXTREMELY weak at times. And if I remember right. That was the time Roddenberry took a step back from the show for other projects. The main reason I like Season 2 best is because they introduce Chekov. If he was in the 1st Season to begin with. I'd probably like it more than the 2nd. I'm big on Chekov.

As much as fans hate to admit it, other than creating the show and setting the ground rules, Roddenberry himself had very little to do with the success of Star Trek.

Explain how, besides just following along with lame-brained popular opinion, S3 is "the worst."

When you're talking about a season that contained episodes like

"The Enterprise Incident"

"Day of the Dove"

"The Tholian Web"

"Spectre of the Gun"

"Let That Be Your Last Battlefield"

"The Savage Curtain"

"All Our Yesterdays"

That list contains more classics with excellent writing than any other season of the spin-offs, and less "clunkers" (below):

"Spock's Brain"

"Plato's Stepchildren"

"And The Children Shall Lead"

"The Way to Eden"

So, before everyone gets all revved up about how "awful" S3 is...let's not forget that it's all relative. While S3 may have been the weakest of the Original Series, it's still better than most other seasons (if not ALL) of the other shows.
