Um, ST isn't real. Writers may try to add a touch of known real-world science and a lot of technobabble, but at the end of the day most folks would fail basic science evaluations if they used ST for lessons.
Besides, gene sequencing became possible in the late 70's and early gene mapping in the mid 80's. TWOK came out in 1982. Were the writers supposed to be clairvoyant?

You know...I'm sorry...I simply always assumed the rat did in fact escape from some science lab....but recently I began to realized maybe I was wrong.
Maybe the rat was simply a pet, maybe it was Fluffy the Rat saddened at the sight of it's owner hanging upside down with his throat slit.
What ever happened to Fluffy the Rat from Star Trek II? Does any one know? Was he saved?
Or is he still out there alone on that space station???

I don't know if you've heard this actually, but the rat who played Fluffy passed away recently. He was known mostly for his stage work as a classically trained Shakespearean actor, besides his work in Star Trek. Little known fact, he appeared on DS9 as a vole, joining Brock Peters and Rene Aubenjois as actors to appear in Trek films and DS9. Apparently he was ran over by JJAbrams, who was totally at fault in the accident.
