Most of the clothing in Kirk's era at least for the women was meant to show as much skin as possible but in TNG the civilian clothes seemed just as ridiculous.
Everybody in one-piece jumpsuits or blouses that remind one of an extra from Pirates of the Caribbean.
Look at Picard and Riker in casual outfits
Or Jake Sisko in what… his first two years on DS9.
Wesley Crushers grey uniform too.
Voyager’s civvies were pretty bad early on too.
Do you remember the outfit that the little trader wanted Data to wear in TNG: Most Toys?
The colors were all so tacky too, loud mixes is everyone color blind in the future.
Why the bad fashion?

people actually wore shirts and pants in the 22nd century.
We didn't see much of the off duty clothes in TOS.
clothing of the late 23rd/24th century sucks.
Kirk in his home clothes in star trek II = blah
kirk in his weird looking clothes in star trek III-IV
Kirk all of a sudden wearing jeans and a normal shirt in star trek V
Star trek VI- didn't really see any off duty clothes
Star Trek TNG/VOY/DS9 = ugly clothes. Super ugly

....Wesley Crusher’s grey uniform was better than those ugly huge cable-knit sweaters he had in the first few seasons. They looked like they’d been sitting at Goodwill for so long they were donated to TNG for costumes.

XD Lmao, I think I had pushed that one out of my mind, but if I remember correctly Sulu’s thing was kinda cool, or maybe it was what McCoy was wearing, can’t remember. Now I’ll have to watch it again!
But not all of the Trek clothing was bad, I remember there being some pretty nice things, just can’t remember what. I know Troi had a great dress/night gown, and her blue shoulder-less dress was good, as well as her aqua dress with the asymmetrical neckline, slit up the side.
Jolan Tru, may your day be filled with peace.

I always thought he raided Bill Cosby's closet for those sweaters.

LOL Get out of my head! I was going to post a similar topic. The clothes were bad and so were the hairstyles.

By that time, nobody will notice. They´ll just think it´s normal. Just like we thought guys with their hair hanging on their shoulders was normal in the seventies
That´s what fashion is all about - both today, in the past and in the future: create the most bizarre clothes and hairstyles, and then present (and sell) it as the absolute highlight of haute couture. The stuff you NEED to have and to wear in order to be considered "up-to-date" with everything.
Personally, it wouldn´t surprise me if fashion is something that will end up being an art. For the artists and their fans. And that "ordinary" people wear just what they like. The fashion of every-day clothes hasn´t changed all that much over the past ten, fifteen years
If there is nothing wrong with me, then maybe there´s something wrong with the universe? -Dr. Crusher

My hip hugger bell bottoms of the 60s, polyester suits of the 70s, and the plumber butt style today... we have no room to talk.
Still.... thinking future.... I'd rather go Ancient Greece, Roman or Elizabethan with genetic enhancements for a twist. I would suspect that fashion would lend itself to "fad" immitations of new alien cultures to be accurate.
The Klingon Ambassador and Federation President looks were the best to me. Some of the Vulcan styles are up there with any Paris (France not Voyager) best!

Bad fashion? I actually liked the clothes they had in ST. But then again, even when it comes to clothing from this century, I seem to have no sense of "fashion."
Goodbye.
I am gone.
