From the Newsweek article - http://www.newsweek.com/2011/03/20/how-dumb-are-we.html

Some of the lowlights:

- 1/3 can't tell you when the Declaration of Independence was adopted.
- 65% can't explain what happened at the Constitutional Convention
- 88% can't name a single writer of the Federalist Papers.
- 80% can't name the president during WWI
- 40% can't name our enemies in WWII (just a few years ago!)
- 73% don't know that we were fighting communism during the cold war (guess that's why so many embrace it today.)
- 61% don't know that a Senator's term is six years.
- 86% can't tell you there are 435 representatives in the House of Reps.
- 81% can't list a single federal power under the Constitution
- 63% can't tell you how many Supreme Court Justices there are.
- 70% don't know that the Constitution is the supreme law of the land.
- 94% don't know that there are 27 Amendments to the Constitution.
- 59% can't name the current Speaker of the House.
- 67% don't know what type of economic system we officially have in the USA.

Considering how badly some of the people on this board don't understand the basic principles and history, this doesn't surprise me at all.

But then this is what we get for a failure of our overpriced gubmunt edewkayshun & indocktrunayshun cystduuhhmm!!!

(Although I guess I should be glad that 71% knew that Joe Biden is VP.)

How is that even possible? And it wasn’t “just a few years ago”.

"- 73% don't know that we were fighting communism during the cold war (guess that's why so many embrace it today.)"

Again how do people not know this, they must live under a rock or forgot to go to school. And I doubt that’s the reason people like the ideology behind Communism.

Most of the political things I can understand why Americans don’t know, because they don’t care enough to know, they remember that Civics was a “boring” class and want nothing more to do with such things.

I feel pretty good about myself knowing I passed the citizenship test, considering how few people can and that I am not really that into politics or social studies.

Jolan Tru, may your day be filled with peace.

In the perspective of history - WWII only happened recently - many of our "Greatest Generation" that fought against the Axis are still alive, so I consider it only a few years ago.

Citizenship is no longer required to be here n the US, so why should you expect the people who live here to learn it?

As long as the government supports them why should people worry about who is Speaker of the House.  Obama is thrilled that most of the assclowns who voted for him have zero understanding of history or how the government works.

As long as the check clears, right?

Follow one of Jim or Rusty's broken chains of logic to understand how bad it is.

And... Even though some may know the officially correct answer, they really don't care because it doesn't align with their agenda (like the Constitution being the supreme law of the land.)

- if the Constitution is the "supreme law of the land" then why did Lincoln, W. Bush AND Obama suspend habeus corpus and none of you care?

- believe whatever your agenda tells you to people.

Well.... I don't know about you, but I wasn't around when Lincoln was President.

And we've explained that we've been against abuses of the Constitition under any president - Bush or your King Obama...  You just stick your head in the sand and ignore our complaints.

These two questions are subjective.

Presuming that most Americans actually know for certain what "communism" is (the evidence of which appears lacking from my observations of many Americans), one may not regard the Cold War as merely being as simple as USA vs Communism.

As for the economic system, again there can be differences of opinion. One may simply regard the economic system of the United States (and the West in general) as being "capitalist". But it could also be described as being a corporatocracy, kleptocracy and plutocracy.

- you only brought up these complaints when a black man got into office.

- if you did not want people to call you a racist NOW you should have spoke up THEN.

- but y'all didn't .... of course.

And another lie - I've never supported Bush and have been against his unConstitutional actions since the beginning.  You just ignore that fact because you want me to support Bush so you can rail against me as a republican.

Just like you and your ilk did when Bush Jr's corrupt and criminal regime was in power eh ?

Yep, we sure did.

Explain to me how knowing the answers to those irrelevant questions makes anyone a better USA citisen than someone who doesn't know these irrelevant pieces of information.

And of cause there is that large vocal minority who still think Obama is not a USA citisen and he is a muslim and pretty much the same people also think dogma of creationism is on a par with the scientific theory of Darwinian Evolution but they probably know ALL the answers to this questions in BamBam's OP. So who are the idiots here ?

This wasn't my article - this was extreme left-wing Newsweek...

Most of these questions are foundational citizenship questions - required learning to build from.

It's kind of like needing to understand addition and subtraction (basic math) so someone can balance their checking account or do a budget.... but then again, looking at how Congress and the President can't figure that out, none of this is shocking.

But based on your response, you don't have a clue about citizenship and no answer will satisfy you.

Oh - and I'm curious - what do you think the supreme law of the land is?

- i know the official answer to the question but ...

- the honest answer is the supreme law of the land is the guys with the most guns usually do whatever they want to do.

- that much is pretty much a truism ... look at the rest of the World; if you think America is different you are just telling yourself stuff to make you feel better.

- sure i would fight and die for freedom of speech, but in the end i know no one likes the truth and usually kill those that tell it ...

- so the fact is i might kill more than one person defending speech ... but not so many as to over-throw the American government and i would be killed.

- and to be honest they would just label me a radical or terrorist and call my defense of free-speech an act of insurgency. etc.

- you know THIS is true.

Most guns huh?!?!  Sounds like Obama's czars & admins agreeing with and quoting Mao...

- i know it is a mao quote ... does not make it less true.

- so do you believe the American Revolution was done without any guns?

- now bam bam is arguing AGAINST the 2nd amendment!

- right wing nut jobs love their guns specifically for this reason.

- just rhetorical silliness ... really bam bam you should be better than that.

There ya go twisting things .... AGAIN...

This republic was set up to be ruled with Constitutional law, not guns.  Our Founding Fathers tried for years to work things out with Britain through diplomacy first - only when Britain used force was when we had to defend ourselves.

No, I'm NOT arguing against the 2nd Amendment - I just understand that it's used to defend ourselves, not used to oppress someone else.

>- exactly!!! and when reason failed they had to use force, thus history supports my statement.

>- the supreme law of the land is violence and always has been.

>- we like to believe we can reason and talk but in the end you have to shoot.

>- the reason all the presidents i mentioned defied the constitution without fear was that they had the power and feared not the People OR the Constitution.

>- if we want them to in the future we should put BOTH W. Bush and Obama on trial for violation of the Law ...but that will never happen.

>- there is a place for fiction and fantasy and reality is not it.

Reason never fails, but some people fail reason.

Remember - Liberty is never forced on the people - only communism/socialism.  Socialists use force and indoctrination (which is why they hate school choice.)

This is why George Washington warned us: "Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master."
