I think it's hard to argue that most deaths in Trek are realistic.  I don't think it's realistic that so many people would have experienced the premature deaths of parents, even if their parents were in Starfleet, which was not always the case.  And I don't think it's realistic that certain crewmembers would just so happen to meet heroic deaths saving their comrades.  These are very movie-like and TV-like deaths, as another commenter pointed out.

As I said in my first post, I agree that there are times when death is an appropriate plot device or subject for exploration.  There are times when Star Trek has used death to great effect, and I've given examples of times I think this was the case.  But more often than not I think Star Trek uses death poorly and predictably.  It either romanticizes it, as with Spock and Kirk and Trip, or it throws it lazily for a cheap one-off scene, as with David and Picard's family.  These are regrettable, unfortunate, and unrealistic uses of death, IMO.

Jadzia's death and Zial's death.
In my opinion, good came from both these deaths...
Jadzia - I am a bigger friend of Ezri than Jadzia (however she was a good character)... if they didn't bring in a new Dax in the series it would have been quite dissappointing... a new host is a natural part of a Trill's life - so we got to see that first hand!
Zial
- Her death was very sad simply because of Dukat's reaction... it really evolved Dukat's character, some people did not like what he became (all religious and that shit) but I liked him being a Pah-Wraith dude... and I loooved "Covenant", personally...

Oh yes, I forgot about Zial!  Yes, hers is possibly the best Trek death ever.
