>really to destroy an enemy ship you just have to knock out their life support. once the crew starts to die off, you dont need any weapons at all. no need to obliterate the ship.

>...but it would be in the Federations regulation to beam survivors to your ship. ...and the right thing to do. unless they are borg.

>

but who said you have to beam them off immediately. hehe

>I watch the trek shows and movies and I've always wondered why fed ships go straight for phasers when fighting enemy ships. Or they use torpedoes when they're already wrecked by the enemy ships. They never go straight for torpedoes and keep firing them until the enemy ship blows up. OPinions?

This is what grinds my gears on Nemesis, why the Enterprise took so long to fire Quantum Torpedoes- it's only when it switches to quantums that it starts to inflict damage on the scimitar

1) Torpedoes would explode when it hit the shields and not be effective in damage

2) Blowing up ships isn't worth it. If you use energy weapons you can take out the shields and target thier engines. At that point, the ships is useless.

3) A blown up ship doesn't provide as much intel and a disabled ship

Those of us who watched TOS in the sixties, when we were kids, got the general impression that the torps were sort of like a nuke sub's nuclear missiles; very powerful and not to be used just whenever one wanted to. Also, in that "Darmok" episode, in TNG, I got the definite impression that the two ships were using phasor fire ONLY to try to disable each other (implying a kind of "geneva" rules of warfare where one doesn't "go for the kill" immediately. Kind of like shooting the masts off a sailing ship, then accepting its' surrender). Also, I noticed, in Abram's movie, a tendency to use phasors as "anti-aircraft fire" to shoot down the enemy's torps (like they were kamikazis or exocet missiles closing in for the kill). That would be an interesting direction to go in, where the torps are the primary offensive weapon, and the phasors are the primary, "1st line of defense" defensive weapon, like AA fire. Shields are the last line of defense.

The Federation doesn't go around blowing up other ships because that is not what their mission is! Their mission is one of peace & exploration! if you blow up an alien vessel, how are you going to learn about that alien's culture/species?

I am neither important enough to hold for ransom, nor radical enough to be considered dangerous. I am a simple public servant.

In that instance, the rules of engagement change between a skirmish and a full on war line battle.

I think the torpedoes are the last resort weapon; they are antimatter weapons and if used improperly could destroy both ships.
