In DS9 season 3 Episode 9 "The Defiant" Riker comes aboard to steal the Defiant.

When O'brien sees him, he smiles and says hello.

Riker tells O'brien he has nothing to say to him and he knows why.

My guess is, he doesn't.

He needs to get O'Brien out of the way with as little conversation as possible. And the best way to do this is to fake not being on speaking terms.

I agree, he doesn't know all the stories from the ship so its just easier to pretend he's mad at him for some reason, and O'Brien knows that reason.

Are you sure it isn't time for a colorful metaphor?

the reason O'Brien knows might be as simple as thinking the rest of the Enterprise crew feels he betrayed them by leaving for DS9.

Remember - this was LT Thomas Riker - and since O'Brien served with CDR Will Riker for so long, if they started talking about the Enterprise, Thomas wouldn't be able to talk coherently as he wasn't there.  If O'Brien figured it out, he might start digging and find out it was Thomas, not Will.

Why? Practically everything Tom is saying at this point is a ruse.

Why do people keep asking this question, when the answer is blindingly obvious?

Not blindingly obvious. Not everyone can read into every hidden motive they see on screen.

It's a long shot, but was O'Brien operating the transporter when Riker got split into two, creating Tom?  Tom might hold that against O'Brien.  (Yes, I know the transporter accident took place before TNG and did not involve the Enterprise.)
