Just wondering if anyone still plays any of the starfleet command games besides SFC3 (which i didnt like) before going through the trouble of installing, updated and trying to get it to run on windows 7. Ive been itching for a game like this for weeks and i miss fighting with the old ships.

I dont play OP. just the original, old school, SFC1.  i didnt like SFC3 either...  what i did with SFC1 is replaced the federation with terran (imperial) ships. makes an interesting campaign.........

so is the SFC campaign. repetitive. boring. predictable.   no, i havent been able to play multiplayer with it.  dont really know why... maybe if we exchanged IP's, we could do the IP link. (direct)   just an option. i think the sfbspc13 and shipnames have to match though.

How about the original Star Fleet Battles board game?  The original had Kzinti ships until Niven objected and sued to have any reference removed.  Too bad.  Also none of the SFC games includes the Andromedans who were in a SFB expansion.  Their ships had energy asorbers instead of shields.  Up to a point they could convert your weapons fire against you.  But if you could exceeded their capacity, they could suffer a devastating cascade effect.  However, at least in SFC, you don't have to worry about the other guy cheating or cleaning out your frige.

Actually the boardgame was better in theory than in actual play.  Combat could be tedious unless you had a referee to regulate the game pulses.  What takes ten minutes in SFC could take well over an hour in SFB.  But in the 80's and early 90's it was all we had before computer games became more sophisticated.

The Kzinti ships have come back in all but name as the Mirak.  But to those of us who have followed Niven's felines in print, it's as if the Romulans were withdrawn from Trek games and replaced with an enemy with cloaking devices and plasma torpedoes called the Tutzigoots.  It's just not the same.  The closest thing to the Andromedans is the Altarian ships in Master of Orion II.  (Though the Andromedans had less exotic weaponry.  Just disrupters and phasers as I recall.)

I could go on and on about that game and the bizarre gamers I played against.  But perhaps I just suffer from nostagia.  SFC is quicker, smoother, and cooler.  More people want to collect  SFB than play it.
