Do you believe bringing in Jeri Ryan was necessary for the Voyager series?

But you're correct about Kes being the one who started to treat The Doctor as a living, sentient being and not just a program.  Kes was also the one who told Janeway about how rudely The Doctor was treated by some crewmembers. Thanks to that, the other crewmembers soon learned to treat The Doctor like a human being.

Nice, friendly, full of compassion but also brave  and determined to stand up for what she think is right. That's our Kes!

Who'd let that cat in here?

I think Seven helps us appreciate the doctor as much if not more so than Kes.  Kes was his teacher, then 7 became his student.

I think Seven is what kept me interested in VOY. By s3 I was getting bored... trading Kes for Seven was more than fair, imo. Seven had a better background, produced better and more interesting stories and watching her evolve was a fascinating  journey the audience took with the character. There was more to Seven than her body, and Jeri is a fantastic actress.

Seven's realationship with the Doctor was one of the best in Trek. They were only crew of VOY that I was constantly liking (not to say I disliked the other, just never connected or felt they were that good)...
Looking back on the episodes of Voyager, all my favourite episodes are centered around either the Doctor or Seven.
