So I have at least two friends who are willing to sit down and watch Star Trek with me, obviously my goal would be to convert them, share the love, etc. Since TNG is the only series (and movies) I own, logically I will be introducing them to that particular series.

My dilemma being, do I just start them off from the beginning, way back at Farpoint Station, or do I throw the best of the best episodes (excluding two-parters) at them to have the best chance of fandom?

At first I only thought of doing the first, but after really thinking about it the second is sounding like it might be a pretty good idea too, especially considering the quality of season one, and even two.

If I were to line up the best episodes, which ones would I show? I have yet to think much about this, but I already know I would probably show Darmok, a truly great episode, and very Trek. Maybe First Contact (episode, not movie, obviously.)

Edit: I want to stay away from two part episodes, thanks!

Jolan Tru, may your day be filled with peace.

Funny that you mention that because that's how I got hooked on TNG. (Watching the movie I mean.)  I did it really backwards......

But anyway, I actually have the same question. I never know what to show to someone to get them to like it.

Wow, I don’t think I would have been able to deal with Trek if I had watched that movie first, I would just have a major WTF moment. But then I’m all about having backstory and facts to back stuff up.

I hear people who watched Wrath of Khan and an intro to Trek really liked that, but as I said, I’m going for TNG. Plus TOS can be a little hoakey for people nowadays, especially to Trek virgins.

Well if I do the second option, what other episodes should I consider showing?

Yes, I did kind of have that moment. Well, sort of. I was like 9 or 10, and all I cared about was that Data was cool, and that the Borg were creepy to me then.

If you wanted to start out with one from the first season, perhaps "The Big Goodbye"?????? I don't know. I liked how it was the first episode with the holodeck and it was creative and a good episode for season 1.

I know you didn't want to know this, but I'm going to say it anyway: A good episode to start out with for TOS is "City on the Edge of Forever". That was my first episode. It was a good one to start out with because it was a fun kind of time-travel plot and you really didn't need to know much about Star Trek to enjoy it. Same's true for The Voyage Home.

Sorry, I'm not much of a help here.

The Big Goodbye is wonderful, I cannot believe it slipped my mind! But then my sleep is all wacked and insomnia, etc.

I should just look at the episode guide in the database, or even look at the DVDs.

I know I'm off topic again, but: INSOMNIA? Tell me about it!!!!!! I freakin have school tomorrow and I can't sleep! And it's 2:15!

Last night was the worst it's been in a while, though. because I didn't get to sleep until around 9 AM or sooner maybe. It was horrible.

So I'll try to get back on topic: umm...... um........ I just know my friend got hooked somewhere in season 2 because she saw it on TV. I think it was OH! That's another good episode! "Elementary My Dear Data" was another fun holodeck one.

Yeah, I stayed up listening to Trekcast, and passed out somewhere around 7 or 8 am, so now of course I can’t fall asleep when I need to X_X And I really need to get my sleep back on schedule for college. Ugh. I should really see if my alarm clock actually wakes me up.

I would show that episode but doesn’t it have Pulaski? I think it would be too confusing to show two different doctors, I would rather stay away from all of season two for that reason, better to keep it all Beverly and have some continuity.

Yes, that's what I told my friend! And I had every season so she could have borrowed any of them! But no, she wanted to watch them on TV, for what reason I do not know. For one, the quality isn't as good as my rusty-trusty enhanced DVD's. But whatever. I don't like Pulaski nearly as much as Dr. Crusher, anyway.

More randomness: I probably would've slept till like dinnertime, but my mom woke me up at 3:00. I know I should be tired, but I'm not........garrrrrrrr......

I really liked Pulaski, but then it could just be that I liked her from TOS and it carried over to her TNG character, but I did indeed prefer Beverly, but I know there are people out there who prefer Pulaski over Beverly any day.

There is something to be said for watching them on TV, you only get one episode to sit and stew in your mind, which is great. But it is also nice to be able to just watch them uninterrupted, as much as you want for as long as you want. Much less suspenseful thought.

Also, when (because even if I do option 2, option 1 would come after if they want to see more) I let my two friends borrow TNG, I am not going to give them more that a season or two at a time so that they won’t know how long it lasts, etc, give some real threat and danger to episodes like Best Of Both Worlds 1, etc.

Well, I have to admit, I didn't mind Pulaski that much by the time season 2 was over. She kind of grows on you. You get to like her the most in that episode (garrr! What's it called!) where she gets old because of those genetically engineered children, because you're like cheering for her. But I frankly didn't like her at all when the season first started.

Yeah, a Borg one might be good. Best of Both Worlds might be a good one. They might not understand the whole Borg thing, but it's exciting and suspenseful, and when you first see them, the Borg are pretty darn creepy.

But see, I feel I can’t show any two part episode as an intro to Trek, it would just ruin part of the major story line. *sigh* idk, I’ll have to think about it and make a list. And check it twice.

X_X Did I really just say that? Oh dear, it really is time for bed.

Ahhhh....... well I'm just remembering one of my mom's favorite episodes is "The Inner Light". And I, Borg, but don't show that one first if they don't understand the Borg concept because otherwise it wouldn't make any sense.

P.S. My stupid Internet just cut out. Again.
